Big defeat

- MSL JUNIOR DIVISION 1 Carrigaline 6 Fermoy 1

Unfortunately not a misprint and a tough one to take for Fermoy juniors as they travelled down to league contenders Carrigaline Utd last Saturday.

Carrigaline after having invested in a new astro now have two astro pitches and no grass pitch! You can tell how comfortable they are with the surface in the way they play, a nice brand of fluid and attacking football.

Fermoy were under pressure from the start and it took a few great saves by Kieran Higgins to keep them in the game early. Alan “Kiwi” Barry and Conor McNulty were repelling a lot of attacks and doing their utmost to keep the Carrigaline forwards at bay.

A bobby dazzler from the Carrigaline winger put Carrigaline one ahead and from there they grew in confidence and followed up with another two in quick succession.

Fermoy changed the formation at half-time and made a few positional switches and they started the second half well. Dion McCormack showing great tenacity in the middle of the park and covering massive ground! Dom Wotjas working hard on the ball and trying to create for the team. Andrew Nolan who came in to centre of the field showed the potential he has with some lovely link play.

Eoghan Dolan on the wing gave the Carrigaline back line something to think about everytime he got on the ball, great feet and pace and ability to carry the ball. On the opposite wing Jack Waters was working hard and got he’s due rewards when he won a penalty which he took and converted himself.

Matty Quish had the tough job of up top by himself and he worked tirelessly to harry and hassle the backline and to create chances and was unlucky on a few occasions.

A tough and sobering game for the team but these lads won’t drop the head and there is no doubt that they will work hard and come back stronger for the next game.

MSL SENIOR DIVISION 2 Fermoy FC 1 Pearse Celtic 3

Disappointing result for the seniors on Sunday morning. Pearse Celtic were the visitors to Carrig Park and started much the brighter putting the blues defence under pressure early on. The Pearse full backs and wingers finding plenty of space to attack. The first goal came midway through the first half, Pearse’s full back carrying past four and finishing from the edge of the box. Fermoy had a few chances of their own but were unable to get on the end of crosses or finish from close range.

Fermoy made three changes at half time and had some good possession early in the second half without creating any chances, the blues best chance came from a goal kick which beat the Pearse back line and John Hurley was in behind but unfortunately the angle was too tight to finish.

Pearse continued to cause problems down the wings and got in for their second down the left. Some poor defending soon after led to the third as the back line failed to cover across and the Pearse striker had a tap in. Conor Hurley pulled one back with a good header late on after some great work from Luke Quinlan down the left wing.

Better performance needed all round when the league resumes.
