A quieter day than normal

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was a quieter day than normal for us as we attended the Cork Athletics novice, U23 women and juvenile U14 and U16 cross country championships (what a mouthful!).

We had only 4 juveniles running today but some powerful running from all of our juveniles translated into medal glory.

The U14 girls team of Ellie Barry, Ella O’Connor and Sadie Linehan tackled the hilly course in fine spirits. On a windy morning, the field was strung out after the first lap of three over the 3,000 metre course. Some strong pack running from our girls culminated in a third placed team finish and earned these courageous athletes bronze medals in the county A. Brilliant stuff, girls for all your hard work over this season and the last few years. Well deserved.

Charlie Nicholson tackled the same course over the 3,000 metre track and finished a fine 8th place overall. Really strong running, Charlie. Sterling performance.

The next race on the day for our club was the novice women, which also incorporated the U23 women’s race. Both Caoimhe Hayes and Sarah Mulcahy were in the U23s and Sarah was just out of the medals by a few seconds, coming 4th overall. In the women’s race, of over 60 finishers Natalie Nicholson led home the team in a superb 10th place. Really promising for the juniors race when that event takes place, hopefully in the near future. Natalie was followed home by Sarah Mulcahy in 24th, Catherine Clancy in 40th, Roisin Ronayne in 43rd, Maire Murphy in 53rd and Caoimhe Hayes in 61st. Brilliant performances on a tough hilly course. Well done ladies on coming 7th team overall.

The men’s team raced over 6,000 metres and in true form, performed admirably in a very strong field. Over 113 men finished the race which is quite a large field to contend with, for the organizers and the athletes themselves. Trevor Geary led the team home in 43rd spot, to be followed by Kevin Hayes, Kieran Harte and Kieran Murphy. The team came 12th overall, not a bad result in the counties.
