Minor hurlers are North Cork champions

-

Fermoy 1-14 Charleville 1-10

Huge congratulations to our minor hurlers and their management team who became North Cork hurling champions for 2020 after defeating Charleville in what I believe to have been a pulsating encounter on Saturday last. Killavullen was the venue for this eagerly awaited encounter. Both teams had performed very well in the round-robin series of games, winning four and losing one of their

5 games. Ironically the game that Fermoy lost was against their final opponents, Charleville but it did not matter at the time as we had already qualified for the final.

Fermoy were first on the scoresheet when they pointed in the first minute. Charleville then played themselves into the match by scoring three points in a row on the 4th, 7th and 9th minutes. Fermoy answered in kind by rattling off the next four points between the 10th and 25th minute to make the score Fermoy 0-05 to Charleville 0-03. Charleville made it a one point game on 26 mins but Fermoy increased it to two again on 27 mins before adding on two more points in the 28th minute to go four up. Charleville rallied again coming up to half-time and scored two points on 29 and 32 mins to leave us leading at half-time on a scoreline of Fermoy 0-08 Charleville 0-06.

Charleville produced a blistering start to the second half as straight from the throw-in they thundered up the field and got a goal. A minute later they scored a point to leave them leading by 2 points. We reduced this to a point when we scored on 32 mins and we did not have another score for eight minutes when Fermoy got the equalising point on 40 mins. We regained the lead on 42 mins with a point and then the turning point of the game arrived on 45 mins when Ben Twomey scored a crucial goal. We then increased our advantage to 6 points when we scored two points on 48 and 49 mins to make the score read Fermoy 1-13 Charleville 1-07. If anyone thought this was done and dusted no one told Charleville as they rallied back.

Points on 55 mins, 58 mins and 59 mins brought it back to a goal game and nerves were starting to jingle as Charleville threw everything in to it. We weathered the storm and got the insurance point on 63 mins to go four points ahead. The referee blew the final whistle shortly after this leading to scenes of pure ecstasy and joy for the players, management coaches and our loyal supporters. Captain Jake Carr accepted the cup on behalf of his team, club and supporters. Well done to everyone involved and the future is certainly looking very bright indeed. Fermoy abu!
