Online lecture series for Mitchelstown Heritage Society
Mitchelstown Heritage Society is organising a series of free, online public talks on subjects of local and national heritage, in keeping with Covid-19 restrictions. The first of these is organised for next Tuesday, 23rd February at 8pm, this is being organised using the Zoom app.
In a juxtaposition with the fiercely contemporary setting of having to hold meetings and gatherings online, the topic for the first talk is centred on the life and experiences of Medieval monks, priests and clerics in Medieval Ireland – titled ‘On my Word as a Priest’: the Clergy in Medieval Ireland’.
Priests and clerics occupied a central position in Medieval Irish communities. In addition to their spiritual functions as ministers of the sacraments and preachers, their basic literacy skills meant that they provided services nowadays associated with doctors, lawyers, notaries,
teachers and even vets. This presentation examines these multifaceted functions. It also explores how clerics were recruited and remunerated, what their communities expected of them and what privileges they enjoyed as members of the clerical estate.
Our speaker for the talk is renowned author, historian and author, Brother Colmán Ó Clabaigh. He will be drawing on his own life as monk in Glenstal Abbey, Co. Limerick and a medievalist specialising in the history of religion and monasticism. He is currently working on a book on religion and society in medieval Ireland.
