T.O. Park lighting plan dashed but hopes alive for grant aid

- NIALL O’CONNOR

A call for public lighting to be provided at T.O. Park cannot be funded by Cork County Council, as it is on private property.

Cllr Deirdre O’Brien had asked at this week’s Fermoy Municipal District online meeting, that the council ‘provide a public light in the car park at the entrance to T.O. Park in the interest of safety of persons attending events in the Community Hall’.

Brendan O’Gorman, the council engineer, said that it was not possible due to its status of private property, but recommended that it could be considered under grants for amenities or community projects.

“T.O. Park is a community centre which has fallen victim to Covid-19. They are a proactive organisation with bingo, dancing functions, and are also named as one of the broadband community programme locations.

“This allows people to work there remotely and they have a car park across the road. They have asked that a light could be erected on the road side, which would make it public lighting in that sense,” she said.

Cllr Frank Roche backed the notice of motion at Tuesday’s Municipal District meeting, and said it would benefit a ‘very good community’.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn said it was a ‘closely knit community doing great work’ and requested that any consideration for fund

ing should be made.

Mr O’Gorman explained that the council were in a difficult bind with funding for public lighting. While Pauline Moriarty, Municipal District officer, said that it could be considered under a community grant application.
