Fly-tipping a problem on the Old Road in Ballylanders

- KATIE GLAVIN

Issues with fly-tipping have been highlighted by a local man, who cited the Old Road in Ballylanders as a hot spot for litter and fly-tipping.

The quiet rural road located just off the R513 at the top of the village, has a number of houses located on it, with the most littered point being between the last house and a farm on the road, according to Aidan Doyle.

“It’s mostly fly-tipping. There’s a lot of bottles of hair products and nappies,” Aidan told TheAvondhu.

According to Aidan, more unusual items in the mix include a swimming cap and labelled business and company pens, which he believes may help lead to identifying the culprits.

Empty soft-drink bottles, plastic gloves, brown paper bags and clothes hangers are among the items dumped on the roadside.

A sign warning against illegal dumping, and informing of the €5,000 fine the public could be faced with for doing so, is located on the road in question. However, Aidan claims that the issue is an ongoing one.

“It seems to be isolated to this road, but it has been going on for about two months now.

“It’s a pity because that road is a lovely road, it’s really picturesque and there are great views of the Galtees. A lot of people use that road for walking too,” Aidan added.

VIGILENCE NEEDED

While it is understood that there is no official Tidy Towns organisation operating in the Ballylanders area, local councillor Eddie Ryan said the area ‘definitely has a number of interested people’.

While Cllr Ryan noted that he has not come across any major issues of dumping or littering in Ballylanders as of yet, he advised the public to be vigilant.

“People need to be vigilant and look out for people who might be suspicious and intent on dumping and littering from cars. If you witness anything, contact the council or the Gardaí,” Cllr Ryan said.

Having been alerted to the issue on the Old Road in Ballylanders, Cllr Ryan informed TheAvondhu that he would contact the Limerick Council Roads Supervisor immediately.
