Full lotto results update

-

This week’s lotto results service is upgraded. We continue our feature on the juvenile playing year of 2002. What’s a good read in these lockdown times is the Cork GAA Yearbook. Enjoy!

UP TO DATE LOTTO RESULTS

It came as a shock to hear of the sad passing of Brendan Hartigan who for many years was manager of the filling station on the Conna/Tallow road. It regularly promoted St Catherines GAA weekly lotto draw and always found a prominent place to display a results poster. Deepest sympathies to his family.

What has become increasingly obvious in Irish society is how any prominent individual central to a major news story be it media, judicial or otherwise absorbs the initial fallout and leave things settle for a period of time. Then out comes the apology but that won’t do. It must be profuse or humble, job done, off you go. How genuine it all is could be open to conjecture. So again we apologise for the non-publication of lotto details through these pages last time around. So we start our update beginning with Monday, February 8. Numbers drawn being 4, 12, 20 and 23 and a jackpot then standing at €8,400 wasn’t won. Consolation winners were Billy O’Connell, Ballynoe, Moroney family Colladurragh, Conna, P Egan c/o PH, Gonna, Laurence Kiely c/o TVM, Bartlemy and Mark Walsh, Kilavorilla, Aghern.

Moving on to Monday night last, February 15 where the numbers drawn were 1, 21, 28 and 30 and there was no winner of the €8,600 jackpot. Consolation winners being T Walsh c/o P.O. Alan Tobin, Tallow, Chloe Higgins, Ballycullane, Up The Rebels, Ballynoe and Mary Glavin, Lacken.

With a jackpot now standing at €8,800 we’re back on Monday night, February 22.

SYMPATHY

There was the sad death of Brendan Hartigan but we also saw the passing of Conor O’Connell,

Ballynoe last week. We offer our sympathy to Shane and all the O’Connell family and the Dunnings at this sad time. Shane was named at left corner back on the winning intermediate hurling team of 1994. He also served a three year term as juvenile club chairman. Diarmuid and Fionn are currently prominent players on club underage teams.

Condolences to the Kenneally family of Kilcoran on their recent bereavement. James plays both codes with the underage section of the club, Also to Johnny and Mark Geary of Tallow, two strong GAA men whose mother Mary passed away. Conna lost another citizen with the death of Rodolphe Semeria, I knew him from La Bigoudenne in Fermoy and he was a nice man. He was a native of Nice in France.

It came as a shock to hear of the death of Christy Ryan of St Finbarrs and Rebel Red Cork fame. He was on a load of successful inter country panels through both codes particularly in the eighties and next week we will pay our own little miniature tribute to the late Christy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh na hanamacha dhílse.

CORK GAA YEARBOOK

Now on release is the Cork GAA Yearbook. Maybe we are the converted but packed with interesting and informative articles you can pick it up at any time and it can be a loyal and trusty companion in lockdown times. There is a full photographic and statistical review of the inter county championships of 2020 now almost over.

There are articles on the divisions, Rebel Óg, ladies football, camogie and Scór. County chairperson Tracey Kennedy reflects on her tenure as chairperson of the Cork County board, a three year stint now at an end.

Personal highlights would be going back to the historic double of 1990 and also the reflection of the

Rebels last time to taste All-Ireland senior football success in 2010. Isn’t it so sad that three players from that time are no longer with us, John Kerins, passed on and Michael McCarthy tragically killed, then only last summer Kieran O’Connor lost his life after a struggle with cancer. A glossy, colourful production costing €8.

MORE SELECTION ON THE JUVENILE PLAYING YEAR OF 2002

St Catherines winning the division before going on to claim the county U16 B football championship would singularly be the highlight. Few could or would quibble with that, but while working on that it became obvious that further success was forthcoming to the underage playing year of 2002.

Based in group 3 A of the East Cork U12 hurling league and a campaign swinging into action with a first round match against Killeagh at Conna sports field on Friday evening, May 24. Goals from James Spillane (now residing in Dubai), Andy Murphy (now in Australia), Stephen O’Brien (Garda based in Waterford) and Brian Twomey (local) central to the home team securing a hard earned though vital success on a 4-4 to 4-02 scoreline. Then came wins over Watergrasshill and Bride Rovers in turn, Russell Rovers despite the absence of the influential Seamus Kearney were beaten easily enough (3-04 to 1-00). Patrick Mangan doing well in the number seven jersey. He certainly wouldn’t be afraid anyway!

St Catherines played out their campaign with a solid victory over Aghada in Rostellan on Tuesday evening, June 18 (2-05 to 1-01). For some reason the Cloyne game wasn’t played. Catherines deemed automatic winners and now table toppers at the conclusion of the league section of a competition involving many hurling strong

holds. A hat-trick of Andy Murphy goals providing the platform for another resounding success (7-03 to 1-02) over Russell Rovers in the semi-final at Shanagarry on Monday evening, July 1. Six days later St Catherines would meet Aghada in the East Cork U12 C hurling champions final of 2002. Fixed for a well prepared Castlemartyr pitch on the morning of Sunday, July 7. Field passes supplied scoreboard in operation and Peter Hegarty of Cloyne on the whistle.

A terrific final, some great scores, vital blocks and some marvellous goalmouth action in a divisional final. Played out between two clearly evenly matched teams with the saints shading it on a half time scoreline standing at 0-03 to 0-01.

Now when against the elements Andy Murphy and Eoin Healy goals meant the scoreline would be reversed with the opposition ahead at 2-03 to 1-05 with about six minutes left on the clock.

There were two central issues to Catherines winning this match. A late priceless Ed Aherne block between the posts allied to the ice cool finishing of team captain Ronan Clancy off placed balls. Just edging over the line on a 1-07 to 2-03 victory scoreline. Alan Mangan, Brian Mulcahy and Kevin Walsh also played well. East Cork juvenile board vice chairman Michael O’Brien made the presentation.

Now Pat Clancy, Kieran Morrison, Alice Aherne, Dick Morrisson and Assumpta Mangan must make the difficult decision of leaving out two players from the starting line out as the county resorts to 13-a-side competition. Catherines playing Carrigdhoun representatives Kinsale in a quarter-final at Ballynoe on Monday evening, July 15. Brian Coughlan and David Ward were very good with Kinsale winning (3-08 to 2-03). Having been hitherto unbeaten it

just seemed to be a harsh looking scoreline at the end against a Catherines team short a few reliable from their regular starting line-up.

East Cork final panel: Ed Aherne, Denis Lane, Seamus Kearney, Shane Walsh, Brian Mangan, Alan Mangan, Patrick Mangan, Ronan Clancy (team captain), Brian Twomey, John Paul Lee, James Spillane, Brian Mulcahy, Kevin Walsh, Andy Murphy, Stephen O’Brien. Sub used: Conor Hegarty. Also on panel: James Moroney, Paul England, Kevin Kearney, Seamus Wade, Colm Aherne, Conor Kearney and Ian Heffernan.

Like their U12 counterparts the Conna field was again the venue as St Catherines began their U14 C hurling league campaign with a slender victory over Russell Rovers on Saturday morning, May 25. In turn victories were recorded over Aghada, Castlemartyr and Fr O’Neills. While Ballinacurra subsequently withdrew from the competition. A resounding success (7-12 to 1-01) over Watergrasshill was a first round championship clash. Doubling for points being the final regular group game of the league. Sterling performances from Orna Neville and Orla Cotter were vital in overcoming a formidable Fr O’Neill’s challenge in the championship semi-final at Castlelyons on Wednesday, July 17. Finishing up at St Catherines 3-08 Fr O’Neills 4-04.

Being altogether much too good (5-08 to 0-06) for Russell Rovers in the subsequent final at Aghavine home for Fr O’Neills on the following Monday evening, July 22, secretary of the East Cork Juvenile Board Eamonn O’Neill presenting the Tom Powell Cup to Shane Cotter, winning captain.

Brian Whelan, Paddy O’Donoghue, Darragh Roche, Paddy Moakley and in particular Adrian Mannix were very good. Yet Kilworth had to work hard in a 13-a-side county

quarter-final on Saturday evening, August 3. Both teams had a fair sprinkling of U12s so that would make the Kilworth pitch seem that bit extra big. Referee was Davy Farrell and the final score was St Catherines 3-05 Kilworth 4-06. But despite that loss it was still evolving into what you would have to call a successful season and it finished up for this particular squad of young players by defeating Castlemartyr on a scoreline of 5-07 to 3-03 in the East Cork league final at Dungourney on Sunday morning, September 29. County leagues were and still are confined to U16 and minor players. Do you know that it only makes sense too as they often take place ridiculously late in the year, are often meaningless and seem to be just there for the sake of it. Often felt they were just dressed up excuses to stop young fellows from playing other codes. Did you ever think they could be driving one down that road anyway? We finish up the loopback to the 2002 juvenile year next week.

U14 hurling team from East Cork final: Ed Aherne, Alan Mangan, Kevin Mangan, Michael McCarthy, Orna Neville, John Barry, Liam O’Connor, Orla Cotter, Diarmuid Murphy, Ronan Clancy, Shane Cotter (team captain), James Spillane, Kevin Walsh, Mark Walsh and Tomás Power. Subs used were: Andy Murphy and Stephen O’Brien. Also on panel were John Paul Lee, Denis Lane, Gavin Murphy, Brian Mangan and Shane Walsh.

U14 hurling mentors for 2002 were Eppy Hartnett (manager), Gerry Fitzgerald and Tom ‘Waxer’ Murphy.
