‘Brazen’ culprits dump in Fermoy Town Park

- KATIE GLAVIN

Dumping in Fermoy Town Park was spotted recently by a local who described the culprits as ‘brazen’.

The local man spotted three large black bin bags dumped in the park near the entrance by Christ Church at around 11am last Thursday.

“I go to the park every morning to walk my dog and they weren’t there the day before. I’ve never seen anything like it in the park before. It’s a new low.” the man said.

The bags were understood to be full of household waste, with the tops of empty bottles visible through the bags.

“To dump rubbish like that in the town park, they’re awful brazen whoever did it, it’s right in the middle of the town. It must have been all one person because the three bags just appeared overnight.

“The birds were at the bags and one of them was starting to rip and the stuff was starting to scatter. They were tied off and thrown in, and you wouldn’t know what people would have in bags,” the man said.

According to the local man, fly-tipping and dumping seems to be more prevalent recently.

BUSY

With a brief spell of fine weather following the heavy rain seen last weekend, the man also noted how busy the park has become.

“There’s a lot of kids in the park, I guess people are going stir crazy, but I’ve never seen anything like this. Out in the woods or in the countryside you’d see a lot of it, but not in the middle of town,” he added.

Following a video of the incident being shared online, the dumping in the park caught the attention of the Fermoy Tidy Towns.

CALL TO NAME & SHAME

Chairperson of the Fermoy Tidy Towns group and local councillor, Noel McCarthy, informed The Avondhu that the dumped bags have since been removed by Cork County Council.

“I am shocked and horrified that someone would have the cheek and the neck to dump in the park. They have absolutely no respect and it’s totally unacceptable,” Cllr McCarthy said.

He went on to appeal to the public or anyone who might witness illegal dumping to report the matter to the council or to An Garda Síochana so that they may follow up on the matter.

“I have never seen anything like that before. These people need to be named and shamed,” Cllr McCarthy added.
