Fermoy brigade attend Castlehyde flood as area badly hit

Fermoy Fire Brigade attended the scene of a flood in the Castlehyde area of Fermoy, following the high river water levels as a result of recent heavy rainfall and strong winds.

A spokespers­on for Fermoy Fire Brigade said that they attended the scene at approximat­ely 3am Wednesday morning, February 24 and were still on-site at 2pm that day.

The brigade was on-site in order to pump water from a house that had become flooded along the banks of the River Blackwater.

A Status Orange Rainfall Warning was issued for Cork, valid from 7pm Monday, February 22 until 9pm on Tuesday, February 23 with forecaster­s warning of very heavy rain, likely to cause river flooding and surface water flooding. Rainfall totals of 50 to 80mm were predicted and expected to be higher in mountainou­s regions. Unfortunat­ely, their forecast was accurate.

Locally, a number of roads were impacted due to flooding and fallen trees, resulting in road closures in many areas.

The N72 R569 covering Kent Bridge in Fermoy was impassible due to flooding, with alerts on the matter issued at 00.18 on Wednesday last.

Flooding was experience­d on the Rathealy Road, leaving the R-666-27 impassible in the Ballyderow­n and Moorepark areas along the banks of the River Blackwater.

This flooding also extended further along the Rathealy Road onto the R-666-44 affecting the Ballynalac­ken, Leitrim, Ballinapar­ka South, Coolalishe­en and Ballyderow­n areas.

Wednesday also saw fallen trees across the region due to high winds which left the R-614-143 in Glenville impassible due to a fallen tree affecting the Lackendarr­agh South, Ballybrack and Ballynaglo­ugh East areas.

Killavulle­n was also impacted by floods beginning Monday and extending into Tuesday, which left the L-1226-0 impassible on Monday in the Ballymacmo­y, Monanimy Lower and Ballygriff­in areas, while the L-12240 was impassible on Tuesday affecting the Carrigacun­na, Cappagh, Monanimy and Ballymacmo­y areas.

POWER OUTAGES

On Tuesday, February 23, a number of power outages were reported in West Waterford from Cappoquin to Clashmore with approximat­ely 1,500 homes affected due to faults at Foxhole and Kilcloher, impacting the Cappoquin, Aglish, Ballinamee­la, Clashmore and Modelligo areas.

The weather event on Tuesday saw flooding in Ballyhooly leaving the L-5755-0 impassible

affecting the Castleblag­h and Gortroche areas.

On Monday last, in the Kilworth area, the L-1416-0 was also impassible due to floods, with the townlands of Ballycloug­h, Ballyvoloc­k, Downing South, Ballinglan­na South, Ballinglan­na North, Ballinacar­riga and Monadrisha­ne affected.

STATUS YELLOW WARNING

Cork City Council warned residents, communitie­s and businesses of the serious imminent weather event with many rivers, including the Glashaboy River through Glanmire, likely to burst banks due to rain levels and the waterlogge­d nature of the ground.

Friday last also saw heavy rainfall across the region, leading to flooding in many areas including Castlelyon­s. The River Bride, which flows by the village, burst its banks, flooding the village park area.

Status Yellow rainfall warnings were issued by

Met Éireann last week for counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford, noting that there would be heavy rain on Thursday night (18th) and Friday. Rainfall of 30mm to 40mm was expected - the warning remained in place from 11.10am on Friday last, until 4pm that evening.

Flood barriers were installed in Fermoy and Mallow in preparatio­n for the high rainfall.

Further flooding was reported between Conna and Coolagown, by the

Aghern turn-off, as well as on the local road between Midleton and Castlelyon­s near Walshtown.

The road between Knockraha and Glan

mire was impassable in parts on Friday last due to flooding, while further reports of flooding saw the public advised to avoid Park Road in Mallow.
