Fermoy Active Retirement group get busy with the bonnets

- KATIE GLAVIN

The Fermoy Active Retirement Group are calling on their members to get involved in creating an Easter Bonnet in the run-up to the Easter celebrations.

With Covid restrictions in place, the group of 117 members in Fermoy and surrounding areas have been keeping in touch via text messages and WhatsApp groups.

According to Acting Chairperson, Fran Hanley, the group had two meetings in early 2020 before the restrictions came into place, preventing the group from meeting again.

“It’s just something nice to do with everybody stuck at home and we haven’t met up in over a year. We thought if we had something to do and to look forward to, it might give us some inspiration,” Fran said.

Annually, Easter would have been a time to don new Easter outfits, complemented by hats or bonnets in a variety of colours and creations, somewhat spurred on by a number of competitions held throughout

The-Avondhu area, especially in Fermoy.

In 2017, a similar event was held by the group in which there was great participation from members. Tiny colourful chicks and garlands of flowers decorated the bonnets and an Easter Bonnet parade was held at Fermoy Youth Centre, where members of the group could showcase what they had been working on.

While this year may be different for the Active Retirement group, members are encouraged to come together by staying apart and to use their imagination as they create an Easter bonnet which they can share virtually.
