Social enterprise to benefit Marymount
A group of UCC students have devel- oped a start-up company which raises money for Marymount Hospice in Cork.
Roots for Life is a social enterprise selling vegetable and flower seeds online, with the profits going to Marymount Hospice. The start-up company wants to improve local areas by encouraging people to plant flowers around Cork and aims to educate people on sustainable practices by selling food seeds to encourage people to eat what they grow.
“Roots for Life seeks to raise much needed funds for Marymount in an eco friendly and sustainable way while also educating students about the importance the local ecology and sustainability”, the students informed The Avondhu.
“We believe that ecology and the environment around us is a pillar of our community. Ireland is known worldwide for its lush, emerald green forests and native Celtic flowers. As a local Irish charity, we believe we have a reputation to uphold. Keeping the local flora and fauna thriving is monumental for our habitat and losing something so pure would be fatal in our eyes”.
Marymount Hospice provides palliative care with the highest quality for those who need it, offering a sense of community and dignity to everyone there. Buying some seeds will help to support Marymount.
“In these times, the bond between individuals and their community has weakened significantly, our charity hopes to promote the local ecology and sustainability to school children around Cork”, the students said. “We want to influence them to support their communities in an active way, impacting positively on their surroundings.”
