A 1993 REPLAY RECALLED Galtee Gaels 1-8 Galbally 1-6

The opening round of the 1993 south Limerick U21 championship, Galtee Gaels v Galbally, took place on April 4th. It ended in a draw.

The replay took place in Kilbehenny five days later. Galtee Gaels were without their influential midfielder Willie O’Donnell. In his place Timmy Breedy joined his brother Andy at the centre. The pair had a major influence on play.

Galbally held the lead throughout the opening half and a long-range Kieran Begley goal boosted the margin to five points but it also ignited the Galtee Gaels challenge. The Breedys and Joe Kearney added to Hanrahan’s early point to set the half time tally 1-4 to 0-5.

A wonderful individual piece of opportunism by Tim Breedy yielded a goal from the restart. When Hanrahan and Andy Breedy added points Galtee Gaels were three points to the good. It was not easy to counteract the Galbally pressure for the last twenty minutes. They reduced the margin with points in the 12th and 19th minutes. Galtee Gaels had the stamina to lift the siege in the closing minutes after Paul Doyle brought off the save of the match. It was his brother Jack who put over the game’s final point.

Galtee Gaels: Paul Doyle, D Fraher, Kieran Luddy, Denis Moriarty, Darren Slattery, Brian Maguire, Sean Kearney,

Andy Breedy (0-2), Timmy Breedy (1-2), Matt Hanrahan (0-2), Chilly Noonan, Joe Kearney (0-1), Jack Doyle (0-1), Liam Kearney and Donal O’Brien. Subs: Ed Moriarty, Neily Spillane,

Galbally: Patrick Rea, John Hyland, Sean Farrell, Owen Tobin, Dermot Wallace, Batty Begley, Rodney O’Donnell, John Kiely, Fergal Finnan, Declan Wallace (0-1), Kieran Begley (1-0), Michael Ryan, Noel Hyland (0-4), William Casey (0-1), Michael Ryan. Sub: Gerry Hedigan.

Galtee Gaels advanced to meet Bruree in the semi-final and suffered a heavy defeat. It was poor consolation that Bruree won south U21 titles in ‘ 90, ‘91, 93, and completed a hurling/football county double in ‘94.
