Relief as potholes ‘the size of trenches’ finally repaired

- KATIE GLAVIN

An issue with major potholes on the L-564315 road between Glocca Maura, Ballinacahera, Lisleigh, Ballindangan and the Mitchelstown area has now been resolved, as Cork County Council workers tended to the area this week.

The repair works will come as a relief to many in the area, with a concerned local resident contacting The Avondhu only last week, describing the road as a ‘complete disgrace’ and a ‘serious accident waiting to happen’.

Prior to the repair works, the issue with the potholes had been ongoing for approximately two months.

“A lot of people who live down that road are not impressed. They’re (potholes) about a foot deep. It’s ridiculous. You’ve to go in on the ditch to avoid the potholes. It’s too dangerous and it’s worse it’s going to get,” the resident stated last week.

The resident claimed that the potholes were ‘unavoidable’ and were damaging cars, noting that he had hit them multiple times and feared he would burst a tyre.

He also noted the dangers the road poses to people who may be travelling by night or to those unfamiliar with the road

Being a secondary connecting road, it is understood that the L-5643-15 would not have been a priority road for maintenance.

According to Councillor Deirdre O’Brien, in time, the road ‘ could need resurfacing’.

“I’ve brought it up to the council and they have given a commitment to repairing the damaged road. I hope that this would be carried out as quick as possible as the road is in a deplorable state. As a councillor, I will be trying to push the matter,” Cllr O’Brien said.

The issue, thankfully, was resolved earlier this week as the potholes were filled by Cork County Council.
