A look back to 1989
It is not very often that Galtee Gaels can claim victory over Croom, but at Knocklong on Saturday last (2nd September) the U13 footballers achieved just that with a well-earned 2-5 to 0-2 win.
The South Limerick semi-final was a lovely game to watch Galtee Gaels played a very attractive game of football. The forwards displayed some delightful combination particularly in the first half. Sean O’Donovan and Pa Hennessy made intelligent use of possession they won in the centre of the field and were always more than willing to participate in the attack.
Croom found the going more difficult with their forwards seeing much less of the ball. Vincent Hogan did most to thwart their attacks. Playing against a crafty opponent he never allowed him the scope to open up the attack. Kieran Luddy at fullback and Paul Doyle in front of him used their size to advantage. But in general it was the forwards who took the honours. Tadhg Carey always looked dangerous. Mossy English posed a big threat at full forward while the crafty forwards Michael Fox and Diarmuid O’Brien were also seen to good effect.
A Pa Hennessy goal in the opening minute settled Galtee Gaels and English had a grand point shortly afterwards. By half time Galtee Gaels were 1-4 to 0-1 ahead playing with the breeze.
Sean O’Donovan scored a great point in the second half and when Mossy English added a scrambled goal Croom’s fate was sealed. The final tally was Galtee Gaels 2-5 Croom 0-2

Later in the month Galtee Gaels were unable to get the better of Bruree in the south final.

GAA NATIONAL DRAW TICKETS
