2005 GAA season in review
DIV 1 HL
Kilworth won their 4th Division 1 HL title in a row when they accounted for Churchtown at Shanballymore, 1-11 to 1-5. The winners held a slight lead all through and were 0-5 to 0-2 clear at the break. Paudie Lynch’s goal in the 44th minute set the winners on their way.

DIV 2 HL
Mallow defeated Araglin by 1-11 to 1-7 in the final at Castletownroche. The game went to extra time with Mallow having a four point win. At half-time Mallow led 0-6 to 0-4 - at full-time it was 0-8 to 1-5.
Three points for Mallow gave them a lead at the break in extra time, 0-11 to 1-5. Araglin had points by James and Michael Kearney, but Mallow had a late goal by Barry John Ryan to seal the win.

DIV 3 HL
In the Division 3 HL semi-final a very strong Ballyhea side easily accounted for Araglin in Shanballymore, 4-21 to 1-0. Ballyhea were 2-15 to 0-0 ahead at the break. Araglin’s goal came from Brendan Carey.
The final at Newtownshandrum saw Ballyclough 2-18 to 3-6 victors over Ballyhea. The sides were level 1-4 to 0-7 at half-time. Two goals by Colm O’Neill helped secure the title for Ballyclough by a 9 point margin. Their captain was Declan Leonard, who was unable to play due to injury.
GOOD WIN FOR ST. COLMAN’S
St Colman’s, Fermoy secured their 2nd win in the Harty Cup at Ballynoe when they accounted for North Mon. It was an easy win for the Fermoy side who led at half-time 1-8 to 0-2. Final score 2-15 to 0-6.

UNDER 16 A FC
Mitchelstown had a 4-11 to 1-3 win over Mallow in the semi-final at Kildorrery. Mitchelstown did well throughout. An early goal by Colin Fitzgerald and some good points by Ian Condon and Liam Keane saw them ahead at the break, 1-5 to 1-3. Kevin O’Gorman with two early goals on the resumption killed off the game as a contest. Tiernan O’Rourke also goaled and there was no denying Mitchelstown their place in the final against Fermoy.
The final was played in Kilworth where Mitchelstown won 1-9 to 1-4. The winners were the better side all through, but had to withstand a great Fermoy rally. Mitchelstown competed in the county Premier U16 FC. They played Beara in the quarter-final in Inchigeelagh and the game finished level 0-7 apiece after ‘Town were 0-5 to 0-4 ahead at the break.
The replay, again in Inchigeelagh, saw Beara come out on top 2-16 to 4-8. Mitchelstown scorers were Anthony Fitzgibbon 3-0, Liam Keane 1-2, Ian Condon 0-3, Tiernan O’Rourke 0-2 and Kevin O’Gorman 0-1.
Sliabh Rua defeated Fermoy in the quarter-final at Riverstick, 7-9 to 1-6. At the break the winners were ahead 1-3 to 0-4 and Sliabh Rua went on a goal scoring spree in the second half. Fer

UNDER 16 A HC
Ballygiblin had a 3-14 to 2-12 win over Sean Clarachs in the semi-final at Doneraile. An early goal for Ballygiblin came from Tiernan O’Rourke and by halftime, Ballygiblin led by a point. The sides were deadlocked entering the final quarter 1-9 apiece. Shane Beston had a late goal for Ballygiblin, as they held out for a final meeting with Newtownshandrum.
The final in Shanballymore saw Newtown’ run out easy winners 4-22 to 3-6. Their well balanced side led from the start and by half-time they were 2-14 to 1-2 ahead. Ballygiblin had goals on the changeover by Ian Condon and Tiernan O’Rourke to come within 5 points. Newtown’ upped their performance and had two goals by Michael Bowles and some well taken points, to be crowned champions by a 19 point margin.
Ballygiblin competed in the county U16 A HC quarter-final where they faced Sarsfields in Ballygiblin. The sides were level 0-1 each after 10 minutes. From here on Sarsfields took control and they led 0-5 to 0-1 at halftime. Sarsfields took complete control on the changeover, adding a further 2-7 without reply, to emerge winners 2-13 to 0-1.

Newtownshandrum defeated Na Piarsaigh in the semi-final of the county Premier U16 HC, 2-12 to 0-17 after extra time. The sides were level 1-12 to 0-15 at the end of normal time.
The county final was played in Grenagh, Newtownshandrum v Eire Og. Early goals by Ryan Farrissey and Michael Bowles set Newtown’ on their way and they eventually took the title 2-13 to 2-5. It marked the first county Premier U16 HC title for the club.
