Neglect of green area in Ballinwillin a disgrace
A resident living near a Mitchelstown park has called on the council to clean up the area on a regular basis.
The man, who does not wish to give his name, said that the green area and playground at Ballinwillin is repeatedly blighted by rubbish being dumped in the area.
He claims that the council must do more for the area.
“There are youths gathering there and they are engaging in antisocial drinking. They leave a lot of debris behind them including cans and other rubbish.
“There are no bins there, but a local guy had been picking up the rubbish, but there was an issue with collecting the rubbish. I just think it is a pity that it has been neglected so much, it should be better looked after,” the caller said.
The Avondhu took a number of photographs at the site late last week, but in recent days it has finally been cleaned.
On visiting the amenity, located in front of the Cope building in Linden Hill, Ballinwillin, we encountered a range of items wantonly discarded, from takeaway food cartons, drink cans and bottles, items of clothing, etc. Certainly not a safe environment for children to make use of the playground space there, with evidence of broken glass on the ground nearby and discarded Covid signage strewn across the area.
Cllr Kay Dawson, who is involved in AROMA in the town, said that funding was needed to refurbish the area.
“The Tidy Towns committee will address this issue and will work on finding a resolution,” the councillor said.
It is understood that council officials are not collecting rubbish bagged and left on green areas during Covid-19, due to health concerns.
