Lidl to build new store in Mitchelstown

- NIALL O’CONNOR

A major construction project is set for one of Mitchelstown’s major retail outlets as a planning application has been made to demolition the existing facility.

The Lidl supermarket at Fermoy Road, Brigown will be demolished and a new building will be constructed on the site.

As outlined in the application, received by Cork County Council on March 2nd, there will be an increase in floor size from 1,768 square metres to 2,129 square metres in gross floor space.

The application said that it will be a ‘singe level mono-pitched’ structure which will range in height ‘equivalent from one to two storeys’.

The building, on the one acre site, will consist of a retail outlet with ancillary off-licence and bakery as well as staff facilities.

The build will also be in keeping with the environmental friendly energy programme of the company with a solar array which will total 984 square metres. Bicycle parking is also planned with 120 car park spaces and a charging point for electric cars.

The build will follow the same outlay as the previous shop. It is not known how long it will take and if extra jobs will be created.

A spokeswoman for Lidl refused to comment on the project and stated that they would not be able to provide any information for a week.

Lidl announced last month that they will create around 1,200 jobs in Ireland over the course of 2021. The German retailer will open six new stores around Ireland, as well as rebuilding seven of its existing stores.
