GETTING BACK INTO FITNESS

Hi Finola,

I’m 40 this year and need to get back to exercising regularly again. I would have previously been quite active. I would have done some gym training and also kept fit through walking/running slowly! Unfortunately, I haven’t ran or gone to the gym in quite a few years so my level of fitness is back to near zero. I would like to follow a plan as otherwise I know I won’t stick to it after a week. Have you any classes or plans at the moment? I’m worried about joining a class as I feel like I wouldn’t be fit enough for it. Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary,

As I’ve said before, it’s all about gradually increasing your fitness level, both aerobic and strength training. When people decide to get back to exercising after doing very little for a long time, usually people get excited and overdo it and get injured.

I would say to listen to your body and take recovery days as well to ensure your body is ready for your next walk etc. Don’t expect to be back to your previous level of fitness so perhaps starting with walking first for a few weeks would be a good idea before going running.

We have 2 online classes at the moment, both Pilates and Movement Revolution. Both classes have 3 classes a week and are available to the group at any time you wish to do them. These classes have a beginner, intermediate and slightly more advanced level. We cater for all levels of fitness so don’t be worried about not being fit enough! Within each class exercise variations are given to make it easier or more difficult too so there are plenty of options.

Also, your timing is good, I have exclusive news for you! We are also about to launch our new fitness program. This is a 16-week fitness programme that includes a graduated increase in physical activity. It builds a foundation for the initial few weeks and then gradually builds this up. It includes a variety of exercise options for each week, including strength, aerobic, HIIT and recovery sessions, as well as some top tips too.

If you’re interested in any of these options and want more information feel free to get in contact! Best of luck and get moving!

Finola
