No celebrations again this year for St Patrick’s Day - well in Ballylooby we are going to try to lift the spirits of the community by adding a little colour to our beautiful little village. Important to note that all will be done within the Covid-19 guidelines.

So, if you see anyone out picking up rubbish, weeding, cleaning, painting, decorating or putting up bunting then hoot your horn! Watch out for very unique greetings made by a talented granny and grandson in the parish. It is important to remember our traditions and this is a celebration of our community and all in it. Congratulations to Breda and Pa Quinlan on the birth of their baby boy. We wish the delighted parents every joy and blessing on the arrival of their young son and wish baby Tadhg a lifetime of health and happiness.

HANG OUT THE FLAGS

At the beginning of the pandemic last March, Burncourt Community Council put out a request that everyone place out floral door wreaths to enliven what we all thought was a short lived scenario. It is difficult to believe that we are now likely to make the same request in March and April 2021.

Let’s start by ‘Hanging Out the Flags’ for St. Patrick’s Day - tricolours, club flags, old flags, etc. Let’s show that the community spirit is still alive and vibrant.

BURNCOURT COMMUNITY HALL - PLANS IN THE MAKING

Plans are in place to create a covered outdoor area at the rear of the Community Hall to cater for events that are unsuitable for indoors. There are many possible uses for such a structure - outdoor concerts, drama productions, summertime entertainment, children’s events and as an overflow space for times such as The Big Breakfast and funeral teas. Other possible suggestions for use are most welcome.

We need your support to see this project through. All donations, regardless of how small will be most appreciated. Donations can be made in the following ways: Lodgement to Burncourt Community Council CLG Bank Account: IBAN: IE06 AIBK 9361 6210 3952 66 (BIC: AIBKIE2D); alternatively, return your donation to Maureen Creed, Breeda Fitzgerald, Margaret Fox, Siobhan Hurley, Willie Walsh,

Mags Carroll, Shelly Caplice, Shane Fox or Seán Fitzgerald.

Please join us! With your donation, we’re one step closer to moving forward.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“If you could know the wide, wide reach

Of love that simple friendliness could teach,

I’m sure you’d say “Hello, my friend,” sometimes,

And now and then extend a hand in friendliness to each”

KILLAVULLEN Contact your local correspondent by email killavullennews@gmail.com

Last March, on Thursday the 12th, the then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar made an unprecedented announcement closing preschools, schools and third level institutions from 6pm that evening. In the same speech he also declared museums, galleries and tourist sites would close and all mass gatherings would be cancelled due to Covid-19, a virus we had heard bits about but knew very little about how it could and would impact our lives.

On St Patrick’s evening he spoke again telling us that “today’s children will tell their children and grandchildren about the national holiday in 2020 that had no parades or parties.” A lot has happened in the 12 months since this week last year and if we knew then what we know now it would have appeared to be a much more frightening, daunting and an almost impossible task. As a local area we have risen to the challenge that presented itself in the form of a global pandemic and we have turned it into something which stopped so much from happening but could not quell our indomitable community spirit. If anything it made it stronger.

Families, friends and neighbours pulled together to make sure that everybody had a point of contact and access to essential supplies. Phone numbers and post codes were exchanged.

We were restricted in our movements but given the gift of time. We had time to talk from a distance, make calls and send messages, time to pick up groceries, newspapers or prescriptions for others, time to post letters and cards. We had time to bake and make, time to discover past times long forgotten. We had time to explore our own area, initially within a 2km radius, then a 5km radius and then a little further. We grew to hugely appreciate our walkways, paths and trails and saw them for the wealth they truly are within our community.

Nature was mesmerising. The fairies came to the railway walk and set up little fairy houses along the walkway bringing with them a sense of magic and enchantment. Our approach roads were given manicures and the many bridges around the parish were treated to a makeover, showcasing their stonework. Rainbows adorned widows. Irish flags were hung, expressing solidarity and thanks to frontline and essential workers. We clapped outside in unison with our neighbours. We lit candles of hope and candles of remembrance. Drive by birthday parades became the norm.

Summer came and sport resumed. The GAA grounds became a hive of local activity and a place to gather while keeping a respectable distance. Conversations filled the air. The sound of children playing, laughing and simply relishing being together brought a sense of joy and hope.

At the beginning of the school year the dormant buildings sprung to life and welcomed back the children. Mask wearing, hand sanitising, social distance and queuing became a norm. Our Christmas lights were lit and not even a global pandemic could not stop Santa from coming to Killavullen in a festive extravaganza.

As a group of people our community have proudly rallied together in the good times and in the darker, sorrowful moments. Kindness, goodwill and compassion have escalated, helping to supress the negativity and apprehension living with a pandemic brings. Coretta Scott King said “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members”.

In the future, today’s children of Killavullen and Annakisha Parish will tell their children and grandchildren about the year that followed the Taoiseach’s announcement and how everyone around them did their best to overcome and to make the best of times out of the worst of times. Be proud! Hold firm.

Mother’s Day is celebrated this coming Sunday. A special day for those who are honouring the day for the first time, a poignant day for those who cannot be with their mother’s due to Covid-19, and a lonely day for those whose mother has passed. A Mother is a person who loves unconditionally, a person who you can count on. Mother means to be especially caring, protective and kind. On Mother’s Day we celebrate all Mothers. The biological mothers, the adoptive mothers, the step mothers, the foster mothers, the family members who have taken on the role of mother, sisters, aunts, godmothers. Each of these types of mothers are influential in our lives. They nurture and support us. Teach us and cherish us. Provide a comfort, no matter what age we are. To all who Mother, thank you.

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig Oraibh! Mass is broadcast live every day at RTE NewsNow TV at 10.30am. On every second Sunday, Mass is broadcast at 11.00am on RTE TV One; on the other Sunday it is found on RTE NewsNow at 2.15pm. The readings of the day are found at the parish website: www.killavullenparish.ie. The theme of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Festival is DÚISIGH ÉIRE! Awaken Ireland! As usual celebrations cannot be held there will be a lot of events and programmes aired on SPF TV which can be found on www.rte.ie/culture and can be watched anywhere in the world. The Oireachtas TV channel will also be broadcasting all of the events and it has something to suit everyone’s taste. The Late Late Show will also be broadcast on St Patrick’s Evening, the first time ever the show is broadcast on a Wednesday.

RETURN TO SCHOOL

Last Monday preschool children returned to learning. Next Monday it is the turn of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils and their teachers. As a community it is lovely to see and hear the buzz that this brings and it will always be a sign of new beginnings and hope. We wish all the children and staff a safe and healthy return.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Killavullen Ladies Football Club are asking for your help. Anytime you spend €30 or more and scan the app you will get a digital stamp. Once you have 6 stamps you can submit them and select Killavullen as the club you wish to support. It would be a great help to the club and a new set of jerseys would be a great saving on expenditure in the year ahead.

There is only a short time for this promotion so the club would appreciate all the support they can get from anybody who wants to support this campaign. You can do your shopping in any of their stores, once you select Killavullen Ladies Football Club as your chosen team they will be given your stamps. This is a great way to encourage support from family and friends who are not even in the area, a way of connecting in a time when we are apart. Go raibh maith agaibh.

CASH AT HOME

Thieves and burglars love nothing better than cash. It is therefore important to observe the following: Do not keep large amounts of cash in your home. Use banks, building societies, credit unions, post offices etc. Mallow Credit Union and the Post Office in Castletownroche are open 6 days a week for you to lodge or withdraw money as you need it. Keep all credit/debit cards in a secure location as well as financial statements, records etc. Out-of-date cards should be destroyed. When out and about, avoid carrying large sums of money.

SCAMS

Be alert to con artists. Don’t fall for anything that sounds too good to be true. Do not give out personal information over the phone unless you know whom you are talking to. This also applies to internet communication. Do not give out your credit/debit card, bank account, social welfare numbers, etc. to anyone over the phone, unless it is a trusted transaction e.g. grocery shopping in a local shop, pre-paying at a pharmacy, etc. Do not leave old and no longer relevant financial statements lying around. Be wary of bogus trades people calling to your door and advising you that your roof needs to be repaired, gutters are blocked and need to be cleared, trees need to be felled etc.

HOME SECURITY

Fit a door viewer and a door chain/ limiter. These will allow you to safely check callers and retain control over security. Front and rear doors and windows should be kept locked day and night. Keep a list of emergency numbers that you can refer to quickly, if required, e.g. family, neighbours, Gardaí, medical or fire service. Keep a Personal Information Pack in your fridge (Age Action Ireland, tel: 01-4756989, for further information). Keep your postcode near your phone and also make sure your family or near contacts know it in case of emergency.

NANO NAGLE BIRTHPLACE

Pondering on Life, a six-week programme based on Jan Richardson’s writings on the concept of Sanctuary, will be held virtually on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm on March 10, continuing for six weeks. The series will be led by Sr Lois Greene, the new director at Nano Nagle Birthplace. To register, contact secretary@nanonaglebirthplace.com to receive a link for each Zoom meeting. This is a new program, not a continuation of the earlier series.

Caitriona Horgan, Shonee, has recently begun volunteering with this group and is willing to collect and take the following items to Street Angels if you have them to offer: hoodies, jumpers, scarves, hats, and toiletries, indeed anything that may be suitable for adults. These will be given directly to the homeless on the streets of Cork and Limerick. You can now also opt to sponsor a sleeping pod which provides shelter from the elements and warmth. These pods are €35 and you can contact the numbers below for more details. You can make arrangements, by text, for your donations by contacting Caitriona at 0863798959.

GO RAIBH MAITH AGAIBH GO LEIR

Every day we are proud of all those in our families and neighbourhoods who go to work to work in frontline and essential services. A sincere thank you to all doing their best each day to ensure we all get through this crisis safely. We are grateful for what you do, inspired by your bravery and courage as well as being very proud of you all. Those of us who are asked to stay at home within our 5Km range should just do that to ensure we all return to a more regular and less stressful way of living, sooner rather than later. When this is all over and life resumes, consider supporting all the various businesses and trades that you have asked for support over the years for fundraisers and events. It would be a great way to support them as they restart and rebuild. Stay safe.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

Churches will be open for personal visits, but public worship in groups is not permitted with the exception of the following: Baptisms: attended by the immediate family only. Weddings: 6 guests can attend. Funerals: can be attended by ten mourners only. The children were very happy to be back with all their school friends, while the staff had a big ‘cead míle fáilte’ for all returning to the three local schools.

While the younger folks. were returning to school, many of the senior citizens over 85, received their first vaccination in Kilfinane on Friday, March 5, much to the delight of the recipients and their families. While more vaccinations were administered to the over 80 year old citizens earlier this week. FISHING

Out for a stroll recently, I met Connie and Elizabeth Henley down at Tallow Bridge. Commenting on a recent piece in the paper on foot beagles and the great days out with same, the conversation eventually turned to another popular pastime, namely fishing for trout, pale and salmon on the River Bride over the years. For as long as memory will allow there has been a strong presence of a fishing club in Tallow.

Whilst I wouldn’t even pretend to cover the entire history of the club, here’s a brief overall text as such and thanks to a few of the local lads far more qualified than mé féin.

Browsing through a beautiful photo album, courtesy of Mary Forde, it covers a period from the early 1940s onwards and is a valuable piece of history in its own right. If there is anyone out there who would wish to produce a full story there are plenty of stunning photographs available.

Growing up in the 1950s, I resided near Dinny Lyons in Convent Street. A keen angler I well remember Dinny heading off down to the River Bride complete with all the gear and basket. Baskets were the order of the day then to hold the fish. These were beautiful in their own right; the artistry of the weave most likely made by local family, the Quinlans, who were renowned far and wide for the quality of their work. That’s a story for another day.

Connie Henley recounts that there were some great fishermen when he himself was growing up. He said he learned a lot from them, in particular from Tom Beecher, West St. who taught him the different skills required. Connie is still an avid fisherman to this day. Indeed, his own son Mike was chosen to represent Ireland back in 1999 - the championship that year was held in Slovakia where he acquitted himself well. Representing your country at international level is a proud moment in anyone’s career.

As with any group or organisation, there came a time when there was a bit of a slump. So emerged a new and fresh group of lads who soon revamped the club. Pat, Connie, Billy and Mike Henley, Mike Delaney, Danny Buckley, Conor (Skippy) Donnelly, Paul Hampton, Stephen (Jacker) Curley and Liam Buckley were hugely involved. I’m quite sure there were many more, so my apologies for any names omitted.

Their fishing patch as a club extends from Tallow Bridge to Mogeely Bridge, an area the club ensured was well stocked, with the fields, ditches and walkways always maintained.

Tallow Fishing Club has always enjoyed a great friendship with other clubs and in particular clubs such as Fermoy, Ballyhooly, Killavullen, Castletownroche, Kilworth, Kildorrery and Mallow, to mention a few. It was many the day that competitions took place, including Tallow, where all and sundry would compete. Lifelong friendships were formed in the intervening years. Fishermen from England, and throughout parts of Europe, who have remained friends to this day.

Again, returning to the older days, I well remember Harry Ronayne, John Singleton, Billy Coughlan, Jimmy Coady and Mick Quinlan at the river.

One of the most prestigious events in the fishing calendar year was that of the Duke of Westminster Cup. I am told it was the one to win, if at all possible. Some of the photographs depict it being presented to winners, but unfortunately too many to publish.

Another was called the Hick Cup and I would appreciate any information on that one.

The one cup which is in my mind equally if not more worthwhile, is the Jimmy Daly Cup. The late Jimmy was indeed one of life’s gentlemen in every sense of the word and an avid and skilful fisherman to boot. This tournament to honour Jimmy will re-commence when the Covid-19 pandemic ceases. We will certainly look forward to that one.

That’s our tale for this week. As mentioned above, there are a stunning amount of photographs available and I would love you to see them all. Maybe when everything opens up once more, the club might consider putting them on display in the local hall. Something to look out for at a future date.

Many, many names and families and many more gone to their eternal reward, with great stories and legacies left behind.

The late Michael Coughlan replied when asked what weight was the biggest fish he ever caught? He said, “Not sure about the weight, but I had to borrow Bobby McCarthy’s tractor to pull it out”.

This is an excerpt from a collection of history in the album from Mary Forde dated 1955.

WORK OF THE TALLOW ANGLERS ASSOCIATION

The River Bride is re-stocked annually; in the past year 20,000 trout fry were liberated. Obstructions such as trees, etc. are removed from the river, the banks are trimmed and overhanging branches cut. Where required, weeds are also removed and where possible, foot bridges erected and repaired when necessary. Two competitions are held annually for the Hick Cup and the Westminster Cup. Membership entitles anglers to compete for the very beautiful Westminster Cup, kindly presented to the club by His Grace, the late Duke of Westminster.

All anglers are requested to join early as by doing so they will greatly assist the association in putting into operation the programme for the coming year. Any suggestions by members will be greatly appreciated.

COVID -19, THE BANKS CLOSING AND THAT PHOTO!

All those who are demonstrating (if that is the correct term) against the current medical advice show little regard for anyone but themselves. Our doctors, nurses and all involved in our care put themselves at huge risk every time they enter their work place. This disease is not just a fickle passing of a bug or two; it kills people and those who have recovered from the illness face a long and difficult road ahead.

There are many abandoned islands dotted around our coastline. To those who put other peoples’ lives in danger by their actions, maybe their next protest should be on one such island and leave them there! Then again, that would be a further insult to the wild animals that already inhabit same.

BANKS CLOSING

Many years ago, an ambitious man became manager in the bank in Tallow. Seeing our fledgling (at the time) Credit Union as a competitor, he vowed publicly that he would close the credit union down within 12 months. I would like to remind him and others that the said same bank is now long gone and our credit union continues to be one of the finest and successful financial institutions in the area.

A huge thank you to all the founding members who had the foresight to establish this wonderful facility in our town over 50 years ago. We will have an interesting article on Tallow Credit Union in the near future.

THAT PHOTO

I imagine Gordon Elliot has in recent days pondered the old adage of “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”. Boy, what a backlash from so-called friends within the racing industry and of course, the inevitable keyboard warriors who wouldn’t know the back end of a horse from a zebra. I hear there is some sort of a GoFundMe campaign for a donation of Kleenex tissue for Mick Fitz across the pond. I won’t be donating.

Stay safe everyone and if possible, look out for your neighbours too.

KILWORTH FORESTRY

Having had to jump through a lot of hoops, Coillte at last set to work on the section of roadway by the river that had been eroded as one aproaches the picnic area in Glenseskin Wood. The forest road was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday as local man Will Collins and his mighty machine got to work, aided by Coillte personnel. Some debris was removed from the river in that area also which was badly needed. A good job well done!

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Continuing our look at the game of handball in Kilworth, the opening lines from the pen of John Fitzgerald sets the scene:

Standing on the dead line

I face the pockmarked wall, it hides the bridge above me fond memories I recall, the side walls mark the theatre, the concrete floor the stage, four players take their places the finest of their age.

The old handball alley was located on Hanlon’s ground at the top of the village where it can still be seen today. The Hanlon family were very involved. Jimmy was a very good player as was Tom and Fr Paddy Cotter, Tommy Kearney, Paddy and Tadhg Barry among others. Some of these went on to represent the club at county level in the 1940s and ‘50s. Joe Power, who had a shop in the village (on the plot by Sammy Walsh’s house), held the position of club secretary.

The games of ‘softball’ and ’hardball’ were played and in 1951, Michael Dunne who was 17 at the time, won a Munster minor hardball title, partnered by a player from the Youghal club. That game was played in Horse & Jockey in Co Tipp, the court there being the only one outside of Croke Park that had a back wall at the time. One of their two opponents was none other than the great Tony Wall who played centre-back with the Tipperary senior hurling team.

A photograph from the 1940s tell us that others who had an interest in the game included Jack Keeffe the blacksmith (where Fiona Turley has her studio), the Brackett brothers Jer and Bill who lived in a house known as ‘the Shrop Hanlon’s’ (where Angela Flynn now has her house on the Coach Road); Garda Pat Farren and Billy Butterworth among others. As a point of interest, Jer Brackett who drove a Quickley motor cycle, died when he was involved in an accident while on his way to Fermoy to see Kilworth play in a North Cork final.

As stated last week, the sport of handball (apart from games against the wall of the old barrack in Pound Lane) petered out in the mid 1960s when the court was finally closed and was to remain that way for the next 20 years until the sports complex was built in 1984.
