Jack is the region’s favourite baby name

Jack has come out on top as the most popular baby name across The Avondhu area.

The list of Most Popular baby names across the country for 2020 has been released by the Central Statistics Office, with Jack not only ranking first on the list of boys names, but also being the top choice across county Cork, County Waterford and throughout Tipperary.

In Limerick County, James was the most popular choice as it was in Cork City too, which was the second place on the overall list, with 495 James’ born last year.

For girls names, Grace came out on top with 410 Grace’s born in Ireland during 2020.

While Grace was the top choice baby name for Limerick county and Tipperary in 2020, both Cork county and city favoured the name Fiadh, of which 366 young ladies were born in 2020.

In Waterford county, the names Emily and Amelia tied for the top choice.

Overall, the top ten boys names last year ranked in order were Jack, James, Noah, Daniel, Conor, Finn, Liam, Fionn, Harry, and Charlie.

For girls names, the top 10 were Grace, Fiadh, Emily, Sophie, Ava, Amelia, Ella, Hannah, Lucy and Mia.

Compared to ten years ago, the boy’s names seemed to have held steadfast, with Jack being on the top of the list then too and Sean following close behind.

Girls names, however, have seen a number of notable changes with Sophie topping the list at the time.

Fifty years ago, however, John was number one for the boy’s names as 2,629 were named John that year, with Michael, Patrick, David and James among the top 5 most popular boys names.

Mary was top of the list for girls’ names in 1970, with 1,896 Mary’s born, with Catherine, Margaret, Ann and Sharon featuring in the top five.
