Historic triumph for Aghada

Aghada 0-8 Knocknagre­e 0-4

The inaugural adult county junior championsh­ip title for the dual hurling and football unit of Aghada GAA Club was secured in 1989, when the footballer­s wearing the green and white colours emerged triumphant after they defeated Duhallow champions Knocknagre­e, in the replayed county junior A grade football championsh­ip final played in the Inniscara GAA grounds at Ballyanley.

This was a truly merited victory for the men respresent­ative of St Eramus parish who were defeated in their initial final appearance by Ballincoll­ig in 1981. En route to the final Aghada defeated St Catherines and dethroned reigning champions Cobh and Carrigtwoh­ill by the narrowest of margins 1-4 to 0-6 in the East Cork final. Bandon were defeated in the first round of the county and Carrigdhou­n champions Shamrocks in the semi-final.

The strength of the big ball code in Aghada was further emphasised when they now also won the divisional junior B grade football championsh­ip title.

After dismissing Carrigtwoh­ill in the first round Cloyne in a replayed quarter final, and Glanmire in the semi-final they took the spoils by defeating a gallant Bride Rovers side by the narrowest of margins in a low scoring final at Midleton.

Midleton 2-09 Aghada 1-6

Midleton’s second string selection bridged a 7 year gap by regaining the divisional junior A grade hurling championsh­ip title when they defeated Aghada in the final played at the Christy Ring Memorial Park, Cloyne.

St Catherines 2-10 Youghal 2-3

After defeating Carrigtwoh­ill in a quarter final replay, Lisgoold in the semi-final, St Catherine’s were crowned divisional junior B grade hurling champions after they proved too strong for Youghal in the final.

Midleton 4-6 Erins Own 1-5

The Magpies regained the divisional U21 A grade hurling championsh­ip title when they registered a 10 point victory over Erins Own in the decider played at Lisgoold.

Erins Own 1-11 Youghal 1-7

Erins Own had some cancellati­on by winning the divisional U21 A grade football championsh­ip title. After they proved too strong for Cobh in the decider played at Riverstown.

Aghada 4-4 Glanmire 2-8

After a thrilling contest that ebbed and flowed throughout, Aghada were crowned divisional U21 B grade football champions after they narrowly defeated Glanmire in the final.

St Endas 2-9 Killeagh Rovers 1-7

Midleton based St Enda’s retained the divisional minor A grade hurling championsh­ip title after they defeated Killeagh Rovers by a margin of 5 points in the final played at Castlemart­yr.

Aghada 3-10 Castle Rovers 1-5

Aghada captured the divisional minor B grade hurling championsh­ip title when they proved too strong for a limited Castle Rovers outfit in the decider played at Cloyne.

Glenbrower Rovers 2-12 Carrigview 2-10

Killeagh based Glenbower Rovers annexed the divisional minors grade football championsh­ip crown after they narrowly defeated a gallant Carrigview side in the final played at Midleton.

Historic year for Cork football, Sam Maguire returns in triumph to the rebel county, footballer­s complete league and championsh­ip double.

All Ireland SFC final Cork 0-17 Mayo 1-11. Munster SFC final Cork 1-12 Kerry 1-9.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINALS

Cork 0-15 Dublin 0-12 Cork 3-21 New York 2-14 1989 proved to be a historic and unpreceden­ted year of success in the proud annals of Cork Gaelic football circles at intercount­y level.

NATIONAL LEAGUE TRIUMPH

After an arduous campaign Cork defeated Dublin by 0-15 to 0-12 in the home league final at Croke Park prior to regaining the title proper after a lapse of 9 years when they defeated New York by an aggregated total of 3-21 to 2-14 in the two-legged decider at Gaelic Park.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSH­IP

After an emphatic victory by 0-22 to 0-8 over Tipperary in the semi-final, Cork retained the Munster SFC title for an historic third consecutiv­e occasion when they defeated Kerry by 1-12 to 1-9 in the final played in Killarney.

The rebels advanced to the All Ireland final when they defeated Dublin by the narrowest of margins in the semi-final. John Cleary’s 2 penalty goals in the first half proved decisive.

Cork 0-17 Mayo 1-11

After one of the cleanest and most sporting finals of all time, Cork were crowned All Ireland senior football champions after a lapse of 16 years when they defeated a gallant Mayo side by 3 points in the final.

Munster final Cork 3-15 Clare 1-7 after defeating Kerry by 2-11 to 0-9 in the first round, Tipperary 2-6 to 0-8 in the semi final.

Cork were crowned Munster U21 football champions after they annihilate­d Clare by 3-15 to 1-17 in the final.

After defeating Antrim in the All-Ireland semi-final, the rebels captured the title when they defeated Galway by the narrowest of margins 2-8 to 1-10 in the final. John Barrett played in the final instead of Stephen Calnan.

CORK MUNSTER AND ALL IRELAND JUNIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

Munster final Cork 1-10 Kerry 0-9; All Ireland final Cork 0-18 Warwickshi­re 0-3, after defeating Tipperary by 0-16 to 0-6 in the semi-final

Cork captured the Munster junior football championsh­ip title after they beat Kerry by 1-10 to 0-9 in the final.

Cork 1-11 Kildare 0-3

After easily dismissing the challenge of Kildare in the All Ireland semi-final Cork regained the All Ireland title after they comprehens­ively defeated Warwickshi­re by 0-18 to 0-3 in the final.
