Ballysaggart man completes 4x4x48 Challenge for ICS

Ballysaggart local Darren Meagher undertook the gruelling 4x4x48 Challenge recently in an effort to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

The challenge, set out by American athlete David Goggins, sees participants run four miles every four hours for 48 hours.

“It was grand, it was a bit of a test mentally and physically, but the weather was on my side,” Darren told TheAvondhu.

While Darren said he often trains, it was his first time taking on a challenge such as this, however, he stepped up to the mark and did so for a good cause.

According to the Bally’ man, the Irish Cancer Society is a charity that is very close to him as his mother is currently undergoing treatments and his grandmother had also been sick due to the disease.

“At times you feel you can’t do anything, but raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society might be able to help her and help others going through this,” Darren said.

Before he began his mission, Darren set up a GoFundMe page where people could donate to the cause.

When he completed the difficult task at hand, he had raised an incredible €8,586 for the charity, however, at the time of going to print, further donations had rolled in, seeing the GoFundMe page totalling just over €10k, at €10,605 in donations.

The community of Ballysaggart also stood behind Darren throughout the challenge supporting his effort, with locals standing at the entrances to their homes and along the roadside to cheer him on, while some even joined him on his run.

“It’s hard at the minute to have the community morale when you can’t meet up or socialise, but there was a good few around on Sunday. It went down a treat. I was blown away by the response,” Darren said.

Darren thanked everyone who donated to the cause and supported him throughout the 4x4x48 Challenge.
