EUROPEAN COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

-

March marks European Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer includes both bowel and or rectal cancers. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in Ireland, after nonmelanoma skin cancer, affecting both men and women, but with early detection, it is very treatable.

With thanks to the support of Servier Laboratories Ireland, we want to give you the information you need to reduce your risk and spot any warning signs early.

Even in these challenging times, it has never been more important to call your GP if you are worried about changes in your body. Some of the more common signs of Colorectal Cancer to be aware of are: Blood in the stool; a change to your normal bowel habits; unexplained weight loss and/ or pain in the back or abdomen.

If these symptoms sound familiar, it is essential you speak to your GP without delay. It may not be colorectal cancer but it is always better to check it out and get that peace of mind or referred onwards if needed.

As you age, your risk level for colorectal cancer increases. As a result, those aged between 60 – 69 are eligible to take part in BowelScreen, an at-home test kit that helps to detect bowel cancer in its earliest stages.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, BowelScreen has been disrupted and also seen fewer people take up their invitation. Screening could save your life and we would encourage everyone eligible to carry out their at-home test kit when it arrives. For more information on the importance of BowelScreen and how you can register online, Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
