Seán’s response to viral Garda Jerusalema Challenge boosts morale
Seán McCarthy is a familiar figure to everyone in Fermoy, and having seen the viral Garda Jerusalema Challenge dance video recently, Seán took up the challenge with his friends at the Cope Foundation.
A good friend of An Garda Síochána, Seán often helps out with the St Patrick’s Day parade or any local event and is rarely seen without wearing some of the Garda memorabilia he has collected from local members over the years.
Seán likes to inspect any new addition to the local Garda fleet when it arrives, and always makes time to have a chat with local gardaí. Unfortunately, Seán has missed out on this contact over the last year, although local gardaí still glimpse him occasionally at his home, when out on patrol.
Having taken on the latest dance challenge, Seán’s video was sent to Community Garda, Conor Gately to share amongst colleagues in the district and according to local gardaí, the video ‘was a lovely thank you message for all the gardaí and civilian staff in the Fermoy District’.
In return, Fermoy Gardaí compiled their own short film with messages of thanks and encouragement to Seán.
Garda Orla Clarke McDonald, who was the ‘Irish Dancing Garda’ in the original video, also sent Seán a special greeting.
“We also gave him virtual tours of some of the new vehicles he has yet to inspect and put together a pack of treats for Seán and his family,” a Garda spokesperson said.
Cork North Divisional Chief Superintendent, Tom Myers, presented Seán with a certificate to celebrate successfully taking on the Jerusalema Challenge, and he was also presented with a special Garda Commemoration Medal for his collection.

Fermoy District Superintendent, Pádraic Powell said: “I would like to thank Seán for sharing his Jerusalema Challenge video with us. It was a great morale booster for all the men and women in An Garda Síochána. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work by Sean’s family and his friends at Cope Foundation, who work tirelessly to ensure that people like Seán are well cared for and stay safe.”
“I urge everyone to please get in touch with us if they think there is anything your local gardaí can do to help you during these challenging time,” he added.
