The Avondhu

Tesco’s rumoured arrival

-

Dear Editor,

The rumoured arrival of Tesco to Fermoy - The Avondhu (11/03/2021) - I believe will have a detrimental impact on the local independent and family retailers in the town and surrounding villages. Independent and family retailers are already under pressure as they struggle to compete with the big 4 retailers who are currently active in the town.

There is only so much money spent by consumers each week and Tesco will expect to attract a customer base that will secure a profitable market share. They will no doubt initially reduce prices, which will have an impact on the viability of small local retailers.

I do not accept the argument by Cllr McCarthy that it ‘ should see more jobs’. What will likely happen is jobs will move from the closures of local retailers in the town to Tesco, jobs that are likely to be part-time.

Our local councillors, Mr McCarthy included, should be fighting to retain the character of the town, supporting local retailers and the jobs they provide.

Local councillors should be aware that if Tesco were to come to join the big four retailers in town, its location could not be worse as there will be four big retailers in the south east of the town, leaving the south west with less ‘footfall’, as the councillor puts it.

What is required are councillors who are committed to the retention of local jobs that are provided by local and family businesses, councillors who are committed to keeping the character of the town of Fermoy - councillors who are not dazzled by the bright lights of the big retailers.

Perhaps a more considered and locally beneficial alternative for the old mart site would be a housing initiative for local families.

Yours, Ted Myers,

Castlecooke, Kilworth.
