Still golfing in memory lane!
The return of non-contact sports training along with golf, is under consideration as part of the Government’s plan to ease Covid-19 restrictions next month. Senior government officials are considering a range of outdoor activities which may be allowed if transmission of the virus falls significantly before April 5th. Hopefully, these discussions will result in allowing golfers return to the fairways in a matter of weeks.
MEMORY LANE
This week’s photograph takes us back to 1973 and the occasion was the presentation of lady captain Kathleen O’Connor’s prizes. The late Kathleen was well known in Fermoy as her family were extremely highly thought of through their poultry business. Kathleen was front of house in their shop on Lower Patrick Street and her late brother Teddy who was also a longstanding member of Fermoy Golf Club worked behind the scenes managing the wholesale business.
The lucky recipient of lady captain Kathleen’s Prize was Liz Slattery who had been Lady captain in 1955 and it was Liz’s husband, Tim who was one of the driving forces behind the expansion of the club from nine to eighteen holes. Tim also served as club secretary for 22 continuous years, such was his commitment to Fermoy GC. Liz’s win must have been an immense source of pride for Tim as it would have been one of the first majors played over the new course in Corrin.
The late Liz and Tim were also well known and much respected businesspeople who had a chemist shop on Pearse Square for many years. Last year’s president Mary Daly and mother of present lady captain Oonagh Mee was Kathleen O’Connor’s vice captain.
INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS
The draws for inter-club competitions are being conducted by Golf Ireland’s four Regions, and will be published later this month, with the intention of commencing no earlier than the middle of May, subject to public health restrictions.
This season’s inter-club competitions will see a return of the foursomes format to events that have traditionally been played in such a way, with special safety measures to be communicated to competitors in advance of the start of the competitions. Golf Ireland have also issued a proposed schedule of dates for Inter-Club Competition and Fermoy GC is due to host the Munster Women’s Four-Ball Area final (East) on 8th August.
CONDOLENCES
It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of former member, Tommy Baker last week. Tommy was a member of Fermoy GC for many years and while he no longer played golf, he still loved the outdoors, and it was a pleasure to meet him while he was out for one of his regular walks. President Niall, lady captain Oonagh and captain Gerry on behalf of all the members and staff extend their sincere sympathies to all the family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
