Weapons find in White’s Cross investigated

- NIALL O’CONNOR

Gardai are set to carry out forensic ballistic tests on two mud and rust covered guns found by workmen in White’s Cross.

The suspected handguns, a semi automatic pistol and a short barrel revolver, were found by workers at a site on Ballycollie Road, White’s Cross.

Gardai said that the guns were uncovered having been buried in a ditch. Forensic gardai carried out an examination of the scene and a search of the area was conducted by the Divisional Search Team and the Southern Region Dog Unit.

“No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing,” a spokesman said.

Sources said they do not believe the guns were being stored at the location, as they were not preserved in the normal manner.

“They would normally be heavily wrapped in plastic and also covered in oil to preserve the metal parts of the gun. It appears that this wasn’t the case here, they seem to have been dumped there or at least concealed badly.

“Normally in shooting incidents, the gunman and the driver of the getaway vehicle would carry guns, there is also the possibility that they may have been intended for a robbery. All of that is in the realm of speculation for the time being, it will be hoped enquiries might take it further.

“Forensic examinations as well as ballistics may lead the investigation in a certain direction,” a source explained.

2019 SHOOTING

One route the investigation could take is related to a nearby shooting in the Ballyvolane area of Cork city in November 2019.

A man was shot three times in the torso, arm and leg in the incident, when a lone gunman carried out an attempted murder. The victim and his partner fled to a nearby house and the gunman ran from Chapelgate, back on to Glen heights Road and subsequently vanished.

It was the second such attack that the victim survived. Although the man made no complaint, gardai however investigated both incidents involving the man, as there had been an illegal discharge of a firearm.

No one has been arrested for either incident.
