MAMMOTH FUNDRAISING WALK IN KILDORRERY AIDS BARRETSTOWN
Dillon’s Adventures undertook a new fundraising event on Easter Monday in support of Barretstown, as 13-year-old Dillon Lynch set out with his family to ‘Walk All Day Within our 5K’.
Patrick O’Brien, Dillon and Rachel Lynch clocked up a total of 77.2km and 92,580 steps over 13 hours, all within their 5Km radius in Kildorrery, for children’s charity Barretstown.
Having previously climbed a long list of Irish mountains in their fundraising efforts, this year was a major change for Dillon and Pat, however, the fundraiser still went ahead within the confines of local roads. The duo were joined by Dillon’s sister Rachel, a primary teaching student who is now undertaking studies from home due to Covid-19 restrictions.
“We set off from Kildorrery Village Park at sunrise just before 7am Monday morning, heading first towards Glenahulla to reach the outer border of our 5k,” Pat told The Avondhu.
The next seven hours saw the trio circle the village of Kildorrery using the border roads of their 5Km limit and by around 2pm, the outer ring was completed.
Next, the team took to the fields and followed the Funcheon River from Glenahulla to Rockmills.
“The grass underfoot was a nice break from the hard surface of the roads,” Pat added.
However, it was soon back to the roads again as the family completed the inner loops of their 5Km limit, returning to Kildorrery Village Park for a few laps, before finally finishing their mammoth quest at 8.15pm on the Mallow side of the village with a wonderful sunset.
“Even though we were quite weary from the walking, we were delighted with all the support throughout and the amazing donations to Barretstown,” Pat said.
‘Walk All Day Within Our 5K’ in aid of Barretstown has seen over €2,500 donated already and the link remains open for donations at www. justgiving.com’ under the title Dillon’s Adventures ‘Walk all day within our 5K’.
