A number of local projects in West Waterford have been allocated funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2021.

€8,000 was allocated to thatching in Knockraha, Kilwatermoy, Tallow. Also in Tallow, €8,000 was allocated to Roseville House for roof repair, structures and coverings including leadwork.

The Deanery located at The Mall in Lismore was allocated €8,000 also for roof repair, structures and coverings including leadwork.

€8,000 for thatching was allocated for a structure located at Scrahan East, Mount Melleray, Cappoquin.

Villerstown House in Villerstown, Cappoquin was allocated €5,000 for the conservation and protection of historic window glass.

Dromana Gate Lodge, Villerstown received a sum of €4,000 for the mitigation of damp and, for the same purpose, a sum of €3,500 was allocated to the Scout Centre located at Mount Melleray.

The county of Waterford received a total allocation of €136,800 this year, with funding awards made under the scheme between €2,500 and €15,000.

Funding was welcomed by Waterford Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler

TD for the eighteen Waterford built heritage projects.

“This is a significant investment in preserving some of Waterford’s most unique, spectacular historic and heritage buildings. The initiative supports owners and custodians of historic and protected structures to safeguard and maintain their properties,” Minister Butler said.

The Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) seeks to leverage private capital for investment in small-scale, labour-intensive projects and to support the employment of skilled and experienced conservation professionals, craftspeople and tradespersons in the repair of Protected Structures.

In certain cases, the BHIS also supports structures within Architectural Conservation Areas.

“We will also see employment opportunities provided for skilled Waterford tradespeople in thatching, masonry, and more. Local construction and heritage trades will receive a welcome boost through this facilitation of works.

“It is very encouraging to see the range of projects in Waterford which will be supported by this investment. This fund will help to safeguard our rich built heritage, keeping many buildings in use and helping to bring many others back into use,” Minister Butler concluded.
