(CASTLELYONS, COOLAGOWN, BRITWAY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CLG) TIDY TOWNS

Tidy Towns has been a feature of Castlelyons/Bridesbridge since its inception, because of this competition the whole area is so much better. Some areas are unrecognisable from what they once were, due to the many improvements and projects initiated and completed in so many areas.

You can see all the various green areas, amenity areas, parks, bridges, trees, shrubs etc., from Spuree Cross to O’Leary’s Cross, including Kent Terrace, Hillside View, Deerpark, Abbey Lane, Rathcormac Lane and Church Lane etc. Seeds of involvement are also taking solid root in Ard na Rí and Berry Hill and their input is so important.

There is a lot of work involved in Tidy Towns but it’s very sociable and fun as it is usually a group project and the craic can be mighty, along with the opportunity for people to get to know the community they live in. There is a place for everyone regardless of age in Tidy Towns, everyone has something to offer, even if it’s just supplying the all-important cuppa!

Workers are required as well as organisers, so don’t be shy, it’s well worth coming along. Tidy Towns costs €4,000 plus annually to fund the group’s operations. If interested in becoming involved, please text TIDY TOWNS and then your Name to 083 0364881.

COMMUNITY CARE COMMUNITY ALERT

This group is in existence with many years, its purpose was to bring together the elders of the community in a social way and to assist with their entitlements such as attaining alarms, Mass radios and improvement grants; also tours, social evenings, weekly open house, etc. This has been a tremendous success through the years with many very memorable moments. Now it is time to re-establish this on a somewhat new footing, this will include Text Alert and a senior alarm system.

Text Alert is of great importance to every household in the community, it is designed to keep you safe and informed in your own home. It works as follows: you complete your Text Alert application form locally and donate €10. The scheme is managed by Muintir na Tire Fermoy Garda Station. When there is any message of importance regarding a disturbance, robbery or suspicious activity in the area that is known to the gardaí, subscribers will receive a Text Alert making this known to you and advising you on what to look out for. Your €10 should last for over 12 months.

If you have not joined, please fill in an application form available from Pauline Sheehan, Coolagown; Liz Patterson, Centra, Castlelyons; Ann Murphy, Kill-St-Anne or James Ronayne, Bridesbridge. New members to administer and maintain this vital service are needed, if you are willing to help please text TEXT

ALERT and your Name to 083 0364881.

S.A.S. SENIORS ALERT SCHEME

The S.A.S. Seniors Alert Scheme is being re-vitalised and is now registered for Castlelyons through Pobal. This is a State funded body and again, its purpose is for safety, security and peace of mind in your own home.

This scheme will see applicants supplied with an alarm pendant, where you press the alarm button if for some reason you feel unwell or fall, are frightened, are in need of medication or for any reason that may cause you distress at any time, day or night. When you join this scheme, you nominate three people you know, be they family or friends. Then, should you set off your alarm, it will automatically raise the alarm one by one with those you nominated until one of them responds. Should no one respond to your alarm, your alert call is then automatically sent forward to a 24-hour answering system that will ensure you receive assistance.

This service is available to everyone who is considered eligible, you do not need to live alone to qualify, you may have a carer and still qualify. You may be alone for periods of the day, in other words, you should not be without this service.

We cannot implement this much needed scheme until we have volunteers, these are needed to help complete application forms and verify the information with the group leader. We need people to install the alarm systems and to ensure the system is working from time to time. All volunteers obviously need to be Garda vetted and any information received from those applying is strictly private. Should you wish to become a volunteer, please text SAS and your Name to 083 0364881.

CASTLELYONS YOUNG AT HEART GROUP

This is the name which has been chosen for anyone over 55 years of age, to those over 100 who would like to meet on a regular basis as a continuation and expansion of the present Community Care Group, who organise events for the group, day trips, weekends away, nights at the theatre or cinema, information evenings and social evenings with like-minded groups from other communities. The direction of this group will be entirely up to those who join it, the possibilities are endless and should be filled with fun, support and friendship.

If you feel you would like to belong to such a group in your community, whether as a member or an organiser, whether you just want the enjoyment or have something to offer, why not give it a go. An autumn commencement post Covid should be on the cards, but in the meantime no harm in showing your willingness and enthusiasm by putting your name forward. Please text YOUNG AT HEART and your Name to 083 0364881.
