Call for Resource Centre volunteers for new arts project

- KATIE GLAVIN

A call for past and present volunteers, who have helped support the provision of services in the Fermoy Community Resource Centre, is currently being made for an upcoming community arts project.

Fermoy Community Health Project with support from Fermoy Community Resource Centre is seeking volunteers to get in touch if they have been involved with Meals on Wheels, Thrift Shop, Citizen’s Information Service, Fermoy Young Mothers Group or any of the community groups and voluntary organisations that provided education and support throughout the years.

Jacinta McCormack, Fermoy community health worker, is leading the rollout of a community art initiative, thanks to funding through Cork County Council Community Arts Grant Scheme and the National Lottery (distributed by the HSE).

“First and foremost to assure people that no art experience is required. Part of the enjoyment of taking part is that it will be informal and enjoyable, people will get to share the experience and learn together how to plan, develop and create art, with plenty of laughter and trips down memory lane along the way,” Jacinta said.

The initiative will run from May until the end of August.

“The group may need to meet online via Zoom. However, when public health measures allows, the group will meet together at the Resource Centre,” Jacinta added.

She noted that help and support with accessing or using Zoom can also be provided.

MOSAIC TABLES

The group will be facilitated by Ballyduff based artist, Katie Nolan. Through the informal conversations, Katie will create and design a selection of images that can be produced into mosaic art. These images will be used to create a selection of decorative mosaic tables, which will be placed in the community garden of the Resource Centre, to be enjoyed by all who use the facility.

These tables will be a wonderful visual representation of what volunteering means to the group, and also a reminder to us of the significant work that volunteers do within communities.

Jacinta said she is currently trying to get the message out into the community.

“If you or anyone you know has volunteered in the Resource Centre over the last 30+ years, please let them know about this wonderful community arts initiative,” she said.

If you are interested in getting involved, please call Jacinta on 085-8742320.
