CLUB LIMERICK DRAW

Tommy O’Dwyer, chairman of Galtee Gaels GAA Club, extended a massive thanks to everyone who joined the Club Limerick Draw for 2021.

“Our usual ways of promoting the draw were curtailed due to the Covid19 restrictions on meeting people. Our draw committee therefore put in a huge effort promoting this year’s ‘Club Limerick Draw’ with club members, officers as well players from our senior team and ladies’ teams putting together promotional videos outlining the importance of the draw. We saw a very positive increase in membership this year with the option of joining online.

Thanks to our draw coordinator, Kieran Walsh, for all his hard work in managing the draw promoters. Acknowledgement also to Siobhan Scanlon in the Limerick GAA office and the Limerick County Board for all their assistance,” Tommy said.“The revenue generated from this year’s draw will go a long way to meeting the associated costs of running the club and fielding our teams. The club will shortly launch the next stage of our development plan which is the construction of a perimeter fence and tarmacadam walkway at O’Mahony Park. Mile buíochas go leir,” Tommy concluded

ALL THE FOOTBALL THEY PLAYED

1957 was an outstanding year for Galtee Rovers junior football team as they captured the south and county junior football championships. The team had an easy win over Kilmallock at Kilmallock on Sunday, September 29. Prominent for Rovers in that game were Billy Luddy, John O’Donoghue and Tom Clancy while Paddy O’Grady and Jackie O’Sullivan were best for a poor Kilmallock side. The full time score was Galtee Rovers 3-6 Kilmallock 1-0.

Two weeks later, on October 13, Galtee Rovers were back at Kilmallock to play Croom in the South Limerick semi-final.

Galtee Rovers qualified for the south Limerick football final at Kilmallock on Sunday when they defeated Croom in the semi-final by 1 goal and six points to 2 goals for Croom. It was a keenly contested game throughout and there was some good football in the course of the hour.

Croom got off to a flying start with an early goal by C O’Connor. Galtee Rovers fought back and Billy Luddy sent over the bar to be followed by a goal per John O’Donoghue, to put Rovers ahead. Before the interval Jimmy Walsh added a point for Galtee Rovers who led at half-time by 1 goal and 2 points to 1 goal.

After the resumption Galtee Rovers increased their lead with two points per Billy Luddy and one by Jimmy Walsh. There was much excitement as E O’Shea drove to the net for Croom as they tried to get on top in the closing stages but there was poor finishing by their forwards and Billy Luddy closed out the scoring with a point for Galtee Rovers who were worthy winners. Mr Eamon Cleary, Ballylanders, refereed.

The final act took place at Kilmallock, on Sunday, December 8 where in wretched conditions Kilcolman- Ardagh gave way on a tally of 2-3 to 0-1. ANGLESBORO PRIMARY SCHOOL GIRLS’ TEAM SOUTH CHAMPIONS 2020

’That day we headed to Martinstown not knowing that it would be the last time we would step on the field as a team. We went into lockdown a week later.

We made history that day being the second girls team in the school’s history to win the title. We came out on top against our club mates in Kilbehenny Primary School. The first time that happened was in 2005 when Áine McGrath captained the team. Twelve years later Áine won an All-Ireland medal with Limerick.

It was great to be part of this win, sharing my last memory in primary school with my classmates and friends and to captain the team was amazing. I’d like to think one day that I could follow in Áine’s footsteps’. (Caylee Hogan)
