Mitchelstown sleep-out in aid of Cork Mental Health Foundation

- KATIE GLAVIN

Local mental health advocate Carmel O’Gorman, has organised a sleep out in Mitchelstown in aid of Cork Mental Health Foundation this weekend.

Carmel, along with her son Michael and friends Elaine, Stephanie and Jack Hennesy, will be taking part in the sleepout where they will watch the sunrise in memory of loved ones lost to mental illness.

The small event will see lanterns and candles burning brightly in memory of those who are no longer with us.

“We hope to release balloons at 5.30am with the break of dawn in memory of loved ones we have lost due to mental illness,” Carmel said.

A recent article in The Avondhu saw Carmel speaking about how people are finding it hard to access low-cost counselling, noting a major increase in mental health issues due to the impact of Covid-19.

“In these strange and uncertain times, more people than ever are seeking counselling services so that’s why we are taking part in this fundraiser,” Carmel added.

Donations made to the fundraiser will go to Cork Mental Health Foundation, which in turn will help local people by providing low-cost counselling within the community.
