Calls for Council to establish timeline for return of bins in Fermoy

-

Cork East TD Seán Sherlock, has called on Cork County Council to provide a timeline for the restoration of public bins in Fermoy, as public health restrictions see more people travelling once again outside a 5km zone.

“The removal of the bins in Fermoy, while understandable in the first instance, now requires a protocol for them to be returned,” said Deputy Sherlock.

“However, what is more pressing now is the need to restore the bins to the locations they were lifted from. I have spoken with people in the town who are volunteers who want to see the bins restored.

“We need on street bin services to resume, so that Fermoy is on an equal footing to other parts of Cork,” Deputy Sherlock noted.

BINS REMOVED IN 2020

A query to Cork County Council by TheAvondhu in October 2020 regarding the removal of public bins around the town, revealed that six bins were removed in the town due to Covid-19, with four being removed from Patrick Street, one from MacCurtain Street as well as one from the bus stop located on Cork Road.

A further two bins were also removed due to storm damage at MacCurtain Street and near St Patrick’s Church on the Cork Road.

There have been a number of calls for the provision of extra public bins for the town, particularly by those involved in the local Tidy Towns group who have had to take matters into their own hands by installing community bins, which they monitor and empty themselves.
