Site clearance haul distances ‘a complete waste of tax money’
It was revealed this week that soil across the Dungarvan Lismore Municipal District is seeing materials hauled to Lismore and as far as Mogeely in East Cork for disposal.
The issue was raised at the Dungarvan Lismore Municipal meeting with Cllr Seamus O’Donnell calling for a dump site for such materials in Dungarvan.
“I have been notified that we have to go up to East Cork with every load of stuff that has been taken up from the roads. We have to go up to Mogeely or into Lismore.
“My honest opinion, that is a complete waste of tax money and the sooner that we’ll allow someone to register a dump in the Dungarvan area to stop this happening, the sooner the better,” Cllr O’Donnell said.
LEGISLATION
Senior Engineer Gabriel Hynes addressed the councillor’s comments in relation to the disposal of subsoil and topsoil from site clearings, nothing that a specific site is required for such disposals and that the council are currently using a site in Lismore.
Mr Hynes noted that there are currently new applications coming in within the vicinity of Dungarvan and once these applications receive the municipal statute of permissions, haul distances will be reduced.
“The bottom line is that we must comply with legislation in relation to the disposal of material, so we need to ensure that we bring that material to sites that have necessary statutory consents,” Mt Hynes added.
