Litter and waste

-

Dear Editor

I would like to welcome the public declaration made by MEP for Ireland South, Deirdre Clune, that the only positive way to tackle marine litter was at source. My hope for the future is that her colleagues of all political parties at both national and local authority level will share her vision in particular on the question of all kinds of litter and waste in general.

By introducing a proactive national waste management strategy where taxation on all litter and waste is secured at source in contrast to the present situation where tax is not contemplated on same until the waste created is about to be disposed.

The revenue raised from the above proactive tax on waste creation would provide adequate funding to enable local authorities to return to their traditional statutory function of providing what is an essential service of collecting all waste to be disposed of by householders and the corporate sector alike.

The above concept if implemented would allow us as a society to have a direct impact into the quality and quantity of waste we create that is denied to us at present due to the reactionary methods being pursued.

Yours sincerely, Tadhg O’Donovan, Commissioner for Oaths, Fermoy.
