Cappoquin win league and Fitzgerald Cup in 2001/2002

-

Last Monday, 12th April, we saw some level 5 restrictions lifted, such as the 5km travel and being allowed to travel within our own county. This Monday some sport’s training will resume and then on 26th April, all underage sport returns. In all probability, football will be allowed only in pods of 15 or so, as happened last year.

Our notes each week focus on Association football, but we often delve into sport, all sport. We keep away from politics, but we believe children should have been out in the fields, playing all sports, before the end of the month. Parents we have spoken to tell us how difficult the children are finding lockdown and many believe the past number of months will have a detrimental effect in years to come. We fail to understand how having 30 children in a classroom is different to having the same 30 children playing sport in a field. Studies have been carried out and the results have shown that cases linked to outdoor activity is 0.1 per cent. This scribe confesses he is not an epidemiologist, but listens to what is said on radio and television and what is written in the papers. But we believe children should be allowed out in sports fields playing games.

Clubs in all sports have worked hard to ensure that all safety precautions were put in place making club grounds safe for children. Dressing rooms were not used, and from we have been told, parents dropped off their children at the venue and came back to pick them up at a given time. The sooner this resumes the better!

We await word from the FAI in relation to getting the amateur (junior) side of the game up and running and leagues throughout the country can then start making plans to continue with the season that started last September or wait to start the new season in August.

Like so many other leagues, the WW/ EC Junior league did not hold its AGM last June and the committee will have to make a decision on the current season and what the future holds. At present, all the league can do is wait for instructions.

MUNSTER FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

As we have written before, the Munster Football Association did not hold their AGM last year because of the Government restrictions. However, meetings have taken place virtually and last Wednesday night one such meeting took place. The WW/ EC Junior League was represented by Sean Sheehan and the news emanating from the meeting is that the MFA Council membership has been extended, with the Women’s Leagues in Munster now becoming part of the MFA. The MFA Council also elected 16 candidates to represent the province in the newly formed General Assembly of the FAI, which replaces the old FAI Senior Council. The good news is the WW/ EC Junior League will be one of the MFA representatives in the General Assembly. For such a small league as ourselves, this is very important to have representation at the highest level of the Association.

The MFA plan to hold their AGM in May, if Government restrictions allow.

AIRTRICITY LEAGUE

For the second consecutive weekend, Waterford travelled up north, this time to Ballybofey to play Finn Harps. Having defeated Derry in the Brandywell a week previous, Waterford travelled with a degree of confidence to a venue that has not been kind in the past number of years. In fact Waterford have not won at Finn Park in the last nine visits, with eight losses and a draw and Saturday night last saw the Ballybofey hoodoo strike again.

Waterford took the lead in the 36th minute when John Martin headed a Blues’ free kick to the net. They held this lead up to the final two minutes of the opening half when Adam Foley scored for the home side, his 4th goal in three games.

The second half saw a number of chances for both teams with Waterford creating their best chance of the game through substitute Daryl Murphy, who headed a wonderful effort at the keeper when a goal chance was easier. With the sides level 1-1 and three minutes of injury time to be played, in the 92nd minute a corner kick by Barry McNamee was not dealt with properly by the Waterford defence and former Blues player, Dave Webster was given plenty of freedom to rifle a shot high into the net past Brian Murphy for the goal that gave Harps the three points.

Once again Waterford failed to deal with a set piece in injury time, as they did when losing away to Drogheda in the first game of the season. Looking at the winning goal, one has to ask where were the defenders? And why was a player allowed such freedom in the area in the final minute? This defending is not acceptable at junior level, not to mind national league. A very disappointing result.

This Friday night Waterford play at home to Bohemians, who defeated Dundalk at Oriel Park last Friday night. This is now a must win game for the Blues.

Cork City had Athlone as visitors to Turner’s Cross on Friday night and the visitors went home with all three points, having scored the only goal of the game with 12mins remaining. This was a disappointing result for Colin Healy and John Cotter. Athlone did come into the game having defeated Galway the previous week and also had a draw in their opening game, thus they were undefeated after two outings and following Friday night’s result, are top of the table. Cork City gave a debut to their recent signing, Jonas Hakkinen playing at centre half and while he did play well, he has to take some responsibility for the goal conceded, as the ball was literally taken off his toe and crossed to James Doona, who beat McNulty in the City goal. City did create a number of chances and another debutant, Jack Walsh, who played with Avondale and is a former Cork intermediate hurler, had a few attempts at goal with one of our favourite goalkeepers, Michael Schlingermann, in top form for the visitors.

At the end of the 90mins, City ended up pointless and they now have only one win from three games played and this Friday night they have Shelbourne as visitors. Shels beat Wexford at Shelbourne Park last Friday night.

Cobh Ramblers travelled to the Markets Field to play the league’s new team, Treaty Utd and the Ramblers at last, in their third league game, registered a point following a 1-1 draw. Having lost their opening two games, Cobh needed the points and they fell a goal behind after only 15mins. Then, with 10mins to the break, Treaty had a player red carded and held the goal advantage at the break.

Many felt the numeric advantage would allow the visitors be more attack-minded in the second half. The equalizer came after only 5mins of the restart - a wonderful goal by Portlaw native Darryl Walsh, who hit a “rocket” of a left-footer from the edge of the area to the top of the net. Indeed, Walsh had to come to the Ramblers rescue in the final minutes when Treaty’s McCarthy rounded ‘keeper Barron, but Walsh somehow got back to slide the ball away to safety and ensure Cobh got a point from the fixture.

This Friday, Ramblers make the trip to Ferrycarrig Park to play Wexford Youths.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

This week we are taking a look back at season 2001/02, which saw Cappoquin win the league title. It was an interesting season, starting with the AGM which was held at the Red House Bar, Lismore on Monday, July 23rd, 2001.

There was just one club, Clashmore, marked absent on the night. Guests at the meeting were Ger Delaney, secretary of the Munster Football Association and John O’Donovan, MFA.

The reports of hon secretary, Michael O’Neill and hon treasurer, Pat Casey were adopted.

Ger Delaney addressed the meeting and said he was delighted to see such a large crowd present and complimented the league management committee on the way the league was progressing. He informed the delegates that Paddy Pollard had been elected as an MFA representative on the FAI Junior Council at the MFA AGM a few weeks previous. He concluded by congratulating the league’s Oscar Traynor team in their first season in the competition.

The election of officers took place, resulting in: Chairman Paddy Pollard, vice chairman Liam Fraser, secretary Michael O’Neill, assistant secretary Tom Power, treasurer Pat Casey, registrar Eamonn O’Shea, fixture secretary Jim Foley, assistant fixture secretary Liam Fraser, league delegate to the MFA Paddy Pollard; disciplinary committee - Michael McBride, Tom Power, Jim Foley; PRO Sean Kerins; U18 organisers - Liam Fraser and Sean Kerins.

At a delegate meeting on 20th August, the draw for the Bolger Cup took place with 20 teams entered.

The September delegate meeting on Monday 20th saw a visit and an address from John Delaney, the newly elected treasurer of the FAI. John informed the delegates this was just his second visit to any league since his appointment and he was delighted to visit and he spoke of the various grants that were coming on stream for clubs throughout the country.

At a committee meeting the following week, the league chairman informed the committee that Sean Kerins was stepping down from the committee for personal reasons and he was thanked for his work as PRO, which saw the profile of the league rise in the last number of years. Liam Fraser and Paddy Pollard agreed to act as joint PROs to the end of the season. As Sean was joint manager with Liam Fraser of the Oscar Traynor team, Paddy Pollard agreed to act as Liam’s assistant for the competition.

In February 2002, an emergency delegate meeting was called to select a club to represent the league in seeking FAI grants towards improving their facilities going forward, which would in turn see the pitch used for Oscar Traynor Cup games. CAPPOQUIN PREMIER CHAMPIONS

The Premier League commenced on 7th October with newly promoted Gortroe winning away to Ardmore 2-3. The 1st Division and promoted champions, Castlebridge, did not start well losing at home to Lismore 0-2. However, in their next game, also at home, they drew with Ballyduff 2-2 with Paul Donnellan scoring the two goals. A Martin Lacey goal was enough for Cappoquin to beat Brideview at Cappoquin.

In November, Lismore lost at home to Brideview with Dan Shanahan scoring for the home side and JP Grey and Dermot Henley scoring for the winners. Castlebridge lost at home to Cappoquin 1-2 and Gortroe won in Ballyduff 1-2. The end of December saw Cappoquin draw away in Lismore 0-0, Valley Rgs A won away in Ardmore 2-3 and Ballyduff won 0-4 in Gortroe.

As we entered the New Year, Cappoquin were setting the pace and they won at home to Castlebridge 2-1, Lismore lost at home to Brideview 1-4 and Gortroe lost at home to Ardmore 2-3.

The middle of January saw a few results that helped Cappoquin extend their lead, with Valley Rgs and Brideview playing out a 1-1 draw at Conna, Gordon Bryan scoring for the home and Michael Keating scoring for the visitors. In Cappoquin, the home team continued their winning run as they defeated Gortroe 3-1 with two goals from Darragh Wilkinson and a goal from Tony O’Donnell. Goals from Paul Donnellan and Le Mac gave the points to Castlebridge as they defeated Ardmore 2-1. The following week, Ardmore had a shock win at home to Brideview with goals from Anthony Ahearne and Niall Hennessy, while Sasha scored for the Tallow side. Ballyduff defeated Ardmore in Ballyduff 3-1, while in Lismore the game against Valley Rgs was abandoned after a serious leg injury to Michael Shanahan, with Valley leading 1-2. This game was replayed at the end of the season.

The middle of April and Cappoquin held a six point advantage over Ballyduff with Brideview a further point behind. However, all the excitement was at the bottom end of the table with three teams battling to avoid relegation, Ardmore, Gortroe and Valley Rgs all level on points, but Valley Rgs had three games less played.

April 14th saw Cappoquin lose their only league game of the season, when Ballyduff at home won with a Brian Kearney goal.

On 21st April Cappoquin won away to Gortroe 0-3; Valley Rgs defeated Brideview 4-1 in Conna and Lismore lost at home to Ardmore 0-2.

However, the following Sunday, 28th April in Conna, Cappoquin lifted the league title when winning against Valley Rgs 0-3 with Darragh Wilkinson scoring two and Tony O’Donnell a goal. This was Cappoquin’s second league title, having won their first in season 1991/92.

Lismore defeated Gortroe in Lismore and the result saw Gortroe relegated after one season in the Premier.

May 15th saw Castlebridge lose at home to Valley Rgs and this defeat for the home team saw them into a relegation play-off with Ardmore; the Valley win was enough to see the Conna team move up the table and only a point behind Ballyduff and two games to play. Valley Rgs won both games, including the replay with Lismore and ended as runners-up to Cappoquin.

In the relegation play-off on 1st June at Cappoquin, Ardmore defeated Castlebridge 2-1 and the East Cork team joined Gortroe in being relegation to the 1st Division, both teams surviving only one season in the top flight.

KILWORTH CELTIC WIN 1ST DIVISION

The 1st Division had expectations that a few teams that could be promoted, with Kilworth, Accrington, Pinewood and Araglen amongst the favourites. Some early results had An Ghaeltacht winning at home to Mogeely 6-3, Kilworth drawing away at Inch 0-0 and Araglen winning in Pinewood 3-5. Pinewood had a good win the following week in Mogeely 0-5, while Araglen at home took full points against Ballybridge 3-0. Kilworth defeated Mogeely 2-1 with goals from F Fitzgerald and B Gill, while Jake O’Shea scored for Mogeely.

November 11th saw the local derby played at Kilworth when the two neighbours, promoted at the end of the previous season, Kilworth and Accrington, drew 0-0. Inch won away at Old Parish 2-3.

On two consecutive Sundays in November, Araglen played their neighbours, losing at home to Kilworth 1-2, with goals from B Gill and J Cahill, while P Buckley scored for the home team, and the following Sunday Araglen travelled to Fermoy and lost to Accrington 2-0 with the goals coming from A Carey and L Flynn.

The Sunday before Christmas the top two met in Kilworth and the home team defeated Accrington 3-0 with Tommy Seymour scoring twice and Brian Gill and the bragging rights and top of the table status for the village team.

The first Sunday in January, Kilworth completed the double over Araglen when goals from E Walsh, D Tobin and a Gerry McCarthy penalty saw them win 3-2, while Accrington were winning in Fermoy 3-0 against An Ghaeltacht, with goals from J Hegarty, D Cahill and B Carey. The following Sunday, Accrington won away in Ballymac against Pinewood 1-4. Kilworth won away at Old Parish 2-3 with An Ghaeltacht’s Tom Power scoring the two goals, one from a penalty while Kilworth’s Ger McCarthy scored twice, one from a penalty and D Tobin the third goal. At this stage it became apparent the two neighbours were the two to catch and as the season progressed, it was a matter of which of the two would be crowned champions. February saw Accrington win at home to Pinewood 4-1 and Kilworth won away to Ballybridge 1-2.

Into March and both Kilworth and Accrington seemed certain for promotion. So, for the second consecutive season both sides were promoted, only this time it was Kilworth as champions and Accrington runners-up.

CLASHMORE 2ND DIVISION CHAMPIONS

The 2nd Division had three teams that many felt would be strong candidates for promotion, Affane, Clashmore and Blackwater.

The following week Clashmore lost away to Blackwater 2-1 and all of a sudden, the league race was wide open, especially as Affane won at home to Valley Rgs B 1-0.

The end of November saw Clashmore win at home to Modeligo 5-2. The first Sunday in December Clashmore travelled to Tallow to play Brideview B and won 1-2 and following this result, were crowned league champions. Blackwater’s chances of winning the title disappeared when losing to Blackwater 2-0 and when Valley Rgs B defeated Brideview B in Tallow 2-3 in early January, both Affane and Valley Rgs B finished level on points in joint second place, necessitating a play-off for the second promotion place. The game was played at Tallow on 24th February and the game ended 1-1 aet - James Crotty scored for Affane and Tony Harpur for Valley Rgs B. A penalty shoot-out saw Affane win 4-1 to join Clashmore in the 1st Division.
