ALL THE FOOTBALL THEY PLAYED

Galtee Gaels junior B football team had their first official outing of 1991, a south league game against Stakers, at a windswept O’Mahony Park on April 18. The Avondhu carried the following report.

“Galtee Gaels captain, William Boland elected to play with the strong wind. By the end of the first quarter it looked like a poor decision as the home side had six wides, three 45’s yielded nothing and they had only a point on the scoreboard.

The second quarter produced a series of points (Galtee Gaels) while William Boland saw the Stakers stand in goalkeeper save his penalty shot. The half time lead of 0-9 to 0-0 looked comfortable as Stakers had not got a single shot at the Galtee Gaels’ line.

Against the strong wind the Gaels attack fared very well making excellent use of their scoring opportunities. They had twelve points on Seamus Murphy’s notebook before Stakers goaled in the eight minute courtesy of some slack defensive work by Gaels. An immediate point reduced the arrears to eight points but Gaels aided by Mike Frahers’s lengthy puck-outs regained the initiative. Three points were followed by a whit flag for Stakers. Jeremiah O’Brien’s sharpness in front of goals produced Galtee Gaels only green flag just before the final whistle.

Stakers will have to show great perseverance if they are to continue playing football at this level. Galtee Gaels will have every reason to celebrate the scoreline - they will not repeat it.

Galtee Gaels: Patrick Cronin, Michael Fraher, Dave Moriarty, Micheal Lewis, James Walsh, Kieran Moloney, TJ Clancy, Willie O’Donnell (0-1), William Boland (0-4), John O’Gorman, Fergal Moloney (0-2), Andy Breedy (0-3), Paddy O’Sullivan (0-2), Liam Lewis (0-1), Jeremiah O’Brien (1-2). Subs: Con O’Sullivan, John O’Donnell, Eddie Moriarty.

The junior B selectors for 1991 were Jerry O’Donnell, William Boland and Michael O’Brien.
