Annes Grove Gardens reopening date welcomed in Castletownroche

- ELLIE O’BYRNE

A 2022 phased reopening for iconic Castletownroche tourist attraction Annes Grove Gardens has been welcomed by the local community council.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed that the 18th century stately home and gardens will begin reopening in 2022, having been subject to numerous works since the house and 30-acre grounds were gifted to the State in 2016 by the Annesley family.

Lesley Sheehan, a member of Castletownroche Community Council, said locals hope that public interest in the renowned gardens in particular will make it as popular a destination as nearby Doneraile House and Gardens.

“Going back 30 years, there used to be open days and garden parties at Annes Grove and it would have attracted busloads of people, so we’d be hoping, and especially local businesses will be hoping, that it will be a real focal point for the public again,” Ms Sheehan said.

€2.1 million has been spent by the OPW on the clearance, development and restoration of the gardens and facilities, and it’s estimated that the annual budget to run the amenity will be €392,000.

“Annes Grove is a jewel,” Labour TD Seán Sherlock said in response to the OPW’s announcement. “Plans to reopen the gardens again are very welcome. This will serve as a boon to tourism in North Cork and underpins the importance of this region as a reference point for important historical homes and gardens.”

Fine Gael TD David Stanton said it was expected that the OPW would apply for planning permission later this year to create ‘a visitor experience’ in the grounds and to refurbish the house.

“This is part of a long-term vision for the site’s development as an important historical amenity which will further boost the heritage of the area,” he said.
