Players give good account of themselves in Mayfield

-

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL LEAGUE Glenville 0-11 Mayfield 0-11

Glenville travelled to Mayfield on Thursday evening last to take on the home side in round 2 of the league.

Playing with the wind in the first half, we started brightly with the returning Dylan McCarthy kicking over. Mayfield replied with a point from play. A James Gowen point from a free, put us back in front before Mayfield replied which left the score deadlocked at the water break 2pts each. Glenville upped the tempo in the 2nd quarter and points from James from play, Josh Cooke free, Dylan and a super score from PJ Dennehy from way out plus another James free had us 7pts to 5pts up at halftime.

Playing against the strong breeze, in the second half Mayfield came out of the traps strong and put the game to Glenville. Four unanswered points from Mayfield had us trailing by 2, before James converted a free to keep us in touch at the 3/4 stage. Mayfield kicked a free and when Josh converted a good free, we were still 2pts in arrears heading into the last ten minutes. Glenville now had the grit between their teeth and Josh kicked another good free, before the stylish PJ Dennehy ran through the defence to kick over and level the game. We had a few half chances to get a winner but overall, a draw was a fair result. This was a good game of football, with each Glenville player giving a good account of themselves. There was some good performances throughout the team. Great to see Dylan McCarthy back after a long injury layoff. Also young Davan Sullivan making his full debut in defence with a great display. Next up in the league is St Finbarr’s at home on the weekend of July 4th.

Team: Dave Quirke, Andrew Desmond, Diarmuid McCarthy, Davan Sullivan, Colin Cronin, Eddie Delahunt, Shane O’Reilly, Kevin O’Neill (Capt) PJ Dennehy, Chris Healy, James Gowen, Mike Kennedy, Josh Cooke, Denis Buttimer and Dylan McCarthy. Subs Ian O’Leary, Colin O’Keeffe, Craig O’Reilly and Niall Sullivan.
