Gardaí issue further advice around scam calls

- KATIE GLAVIN

Gardaí are warning members of the public of scam calls, which are mainly coming from numbers with the 087 prefix.

Members of the public are urged to spread the word of fraud prevention as people continue to fall victim to such scams on a daily basis.

Recent weeks have seen gardaí receive reports nationwide relating to automated scam phone calls. In these calls, the recipient is advised via a recorded message that An Garda Síochána is investigating them in relation to suspicious activity linked to their PPS number.

To rectify the situation, the recipient is then advised to press a number to speak to someone further in relation to the matter.

An Garda Síochána have offered advice to the public when in receipt of such communications.

SENSITIVE INFORMATION

Gardaí are asking people to not engage with the caller, not return the call and not to follow the automated instructions, such as pressing specific numbers as the caller may request.

Never disclose personal or financial information, and hang up and block the number if possible, gardaí have advised.

“Whilst the scammers may change their stories and methods, their goal is always the same. They want to access your sensitive information and get their hands on your money,” a garda statement read.

If you believe you have fallen victim to this scam, contact your financial institution and report the matter to local gardaí.
