Extension plans for St Mary’s School, Mallow

- MARIAN ROCHE

The board of management of St Mary’s Secondary School in Mallow have applied for planning permission to construct a new school building this week, after funding was allocated on May 13, 2021.

Funding for the works has been allocated under the Department of Education’s Additional Accommodation Scheme. The scheme is to assist in situations where the need for additional accommodation is likely to be for a period of more than three years.

The plans include the construction of a new prefabricated school building incorporating four general classrooms. It also includes provisions for office and toilet facilities, and the connection of foul and surface water sewer systems, along with all ancillary site works. The plans also allow for the relocation of the existing car park to the existing tennis court.

Built in 1950, the building has been used as a secondary school since 1932. Increasing student numbers have necessitated numerous extensions to the educational premises over the years, in 1970, 1974, 1982 and 1987.
