Young Farmers must not be forgotten in the closing hours of CAP negotiations
“Macra na Feirme urge Minister McConalogue not to lose sight of the importance of young farmers in the context of generational renewal in the final hours of CAP negotiations”, according to Macra na Feirme National President John Keane.
Young farmers need improved support and commitment in the context of CAP. With generational renewal elevated to one of the nine key objectives, an increase in support and ambition is needed to deliver for young farmers.
“Agreements made at an EU level must ensure that active productive young farmers are supported. Any deals agreed must be farmer-focused and deliver a more resilient sector that delivers for young farmers”, says President Keane.
Young farmers and young people considering entering farming need a clear commitment to the delivery of measures that will achieve real positive changes in order to drive generational renewal.
“Our EU leaders and our own Minister must not forget the important role young farmers have to play in driving environmental progress and fostering a sector that can deliver on other key commitments. A bad deal is not an option for young farmers who have for too long been left to one side”, concludes President Keane.
