DIV 2 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Abbey Rovers kicked off their division 2 football league campaign, with a home match against Clyda Rovers on Tuesday night last. Played in overcast and sometimes damp conditions in Castletownroche, this was always likely to be a big test for our players. We have a number of injuries at present, so the team knew they would have their work cut out against a physically strong Mourneabbey outfit

The visitors started strongly, registering the first 5 points of the night. However, the next score was for Abbey Rovers with the industrious Mark O’Callaghan getting on the end of a move to finish to the net. Just before the water break Clyda struck for a goal of their own. The second quarter saw Abbey Rovers register points through Mark (2), Dylan O’Connor and Aiden O’Leary. Clyda continued to press and a goal before half time left our lads with a mountain to climb heading in to the second half, trailing 2-09 to 1-04.

The second half was a very even affair and Abbey Rovers played some very good football. Our backs got to grips with the Clyda attack and an exhibition of point scoring, both from placed balls and from play, saw Dylan register another 5 points. At the end Clyda were deserving 2-15 to 1-09 winners, but the scoreline does not reflect the effort put in by our young team, one of the youngest to take the pitch for Abbey Rovers in a number of years. Hopefully the injuries will have cleared up by the time the next round of the league is to be played, which will leave us in a stronger position.

Team: Johnny Batterberry, Liam Sugrue, Sean Sugrue, Liam McGrath, Adrian O’Donovan, Jack Relihan, Noah O’Brien, James Lenihan, Dylan O’Connor, Mark O’Callaghan, Aiden O’Leary, Dane O’Neill, James Ladd, Muiris Browne, David Linehan. Subs David Butler and Mick Ryan.

Our hurling league encounter v Kilworth, scheduled for Sunday last, was postponed and will be played at a later date. Our next scheduled action is a football league game against Glanworth in Glanworth on Tuesday next, July 6, with a 7.30 throw-in.

CASTLETOWNROCHE JUVENILE GAA

Our U7, 9 and 11 hurlers had a productive morning in Castletownroche last Saturday, where they played host to Ballyhea. It was a great morning, with all players getting some invaluable match practice and getting a chance to put their skills to good use. There are plenty of more matches lined up over the coming weeks, so look out for further updates on our up and coming stars in these notes.
