Great showing from intermediate hurlers
RED FM HURLING LEAGUE GROUP 4B Castlelyons 1-17 Fermoy 1-18
Our intermediate hurlers made the short journey to Páirc Mac Gearailt, Fermoy to take on the home side in this year’s league. We were short several players, but we still fielded eight of our 2020 county final side. It was a lovely evening for hurling, the pitch was in massive order, with a handy crowd.
We were treated to the proverbial cracker as both sides went all out. Davy Morrison put us 0-1 early. Then shortly after Davy latched onto a great ball in from Michael Spillane to flick to the net and put us 1-1 up. Gradually Fermoy fought their way into the game and sent over 0-4 as Jake Carr won a lot of ball for them in the half forward line. A Ml Spillane free and splendid Leo Doocey point put us 1-3 to 0-5 at the water break.
Fermoy restarted strong and our backs defended well especially the full line of J O’Leary, C O’Neill, and T Carroll. They had two points before Ml Spillane had a point for us from a free. We were doing nicely again but failed to find the target a few times. Then Ruairí O’Hagan, reached to the clouds to fetch the sliotar, turned and drove over a rousing point for Fermoy. This was followed another Carr point. Ml Spillane pointed again from a free as Darragh Tobin was fouled but Fermoy closed out the scoring with another 0-1 to leave the score Fermoy 0-11 Castlelyons 1-5 at the short whistle.
We had to make a half time change as Anthony Spillane came on for his first bit of game time this year due to injury and Davy Morrison had to leave on medical advice. Fermoy started very well, pinging the ball about and finding their men at ease.
Our goalie Shane O’Sullivan who had a good first half made a massive save from Shane Ahearne. Eoin Maye and James Kearney were doing well in the middle for us while our halfbacks C McCarthy, C Barry and P Roche battled hard against a strong Fermoy half forward line. A Fenton with 0-2, Leon Doocey and E Maye 0-1 each took us to the final water break with Fermoy leading 0-15 to 1-9.
On the resumption Colm O’Neill our fullback came tearing downfield on a mighty run and laid off lovely to Fenton who put over a good point. Then a little controversy as the referee awarded Fermoy a penalty but again our goalie Shane O’Sullivan made a massive save and we came downfield for another Alan Fenton point. Then Alan levelled it with a massive 0-1.
However, not to be outdone Fermoy won an a free on the left wing and Jake Carr who was doing well all evening caught our backs napping as he pinged Shane Ahearn with an inch perfect fast pass from the free and Ahearne banged to the net to put them up three. But what a finish as Alan Fenton had 0-3 for us while Derek Daly and Kieran Morrison had 0-1 each for Fermoy.
Castlelyons drove on again and Anthony Spillane brought it back to just a point but with the clock in the square even saying time up as well as the ref it ended 1-18 to 1-17. A great game for both sides and while Fermoy were missing a few players on the night, they just about deserved victory.
We have a bit of work to do for the championship, but it was great to see our younger players of P Roche, C McCarthy, J Kearney, and D Morrison do so well and a 0-8 from Alan Fenton in a half hour was some return. We learned a fair bit from this game and getting our injured players back fully fit plus our county men must now be the goal for the championship.

CASTLELYONS BEATEN BY CLOYNE IN EAST CORK JUNIOR C LEAGUE Cloyne 4-13 Castlelyons 2-13
Castlelyons made the long road to Cloyne on Monday evening and well done to mentors John McCarthy and Michael O’Donovan who had seventeen of a panel for our third team. It was a mighty evening for hurling. Cloyne who had a crafty outfit and a huge panel started very well and had 1-4 on the board before we had our first from a free by Ciarán McGann as Ian O’Sullivan was fouled. Ciarán McGann and Ian O’Sullivan had 0-1 but Cloyne with a fortuitous goal and 0-2 made it 2-6 to 0-2 at the water break.
We did well after the break with strong hurling from our backs as Eoin Barry, Pearse Varner and Declan Geary did well. Griffin O’Keeney upped his game and young Oscar Hallihan did well in the middle and banged over a long range 0-1 while Ciarán McGann supplied 0-3 and Dara Spillane done well. We were 2-8 to 0-6 at half-time.
However, Cloyne pulled away again as they had the manpower and brought on some strong subs. Credit to our lads they never gave up as Declan Varner and Mark Murphy entered the fray to great effect and Griffin O’Keeney upped his game. But Oscar Hallihan now operating at corner forward did mighty as he took on Cloyne a few times and banged in two great goals. Dara Spillane did well too with Michael John Dorgan mixing his power with the Cloyne lads.
Cloyne love their hurling, they had a big panel with everyone out and you could see from their attitude they would play in their bare feet in the snow. Overall, our lads matched Cloyne for heart and spirit and did very well. Great to see Declan Varner back after a little time out and what a pity that a few more fellows who are eligible for junior C were unavailable as it was a warm evening and like the Euros some were feeling the heat.

CAMOGIE U16 2020 FINAL
The 2020 U16B Plate final was played on Friday, June 18 in Castle Road. The Castlelyons U16 girls were up against Carrigaline. Castlelyons lead the game with Ciara Morrison getting an early goal, Carrigaline swiftly replied with a goal the teams were square. They were level for a long time as scores were hard it come by before Carrigaline scored a second goal to put them 3 points ahead at half-time. The half-time score was 2-2 to 1-2.
In the second half scoring resumed and Carrigaline started to pull ahead, they were leading by 5 points when Robyn Hickey scored a second goal for Castlelyons leaving 2 points between the teams. Carrigaline scored a third goal to widen the gap between the two teams. The Castlelyons girls fought back again scoring two more goals to try and close the gap, but Carrigaline won by 3 points. This was a mighty performance from Castlelyons on the night as they showed a super attitude, fighting for every ball that came their way. Well done girls. Final score 4-8 to 4-5.

CAMOGIE JUNIOR C LEAGUE
Castlelyons junior C ladies played their first league match of the season away to Kilworth last Friday evening. They started off the game strong and kept the tempo up throughout the match. Castlelyons were leading at half-time at 0-10 points to 0-5.
The second half started off strong again with Castlelyons putting up a few more scores on the board. After the water break Kilworth got a goal and Castlelyons replied by putting more points on the board. The final score was 0-16 to 1-5. It is the first win for this team and the girls had some excellent performances.

CAMOGIE U8s, U10s AND U11s
The U8 girls played Fermoy last Saturday morning at home. The girls played fantastic and should be proud as it was their first game ever for some of the girls on the team. Well done. Our U10 girls had their first match of the season at home last week against Dungourney, having played St Catherines the week previous. The girls played very well in both matches and worked very well as a team. Our U11 girls who played Dungourney last week in their first match of the year. The game was very entertaining with the girls giving some particularly good performances. Keep it up girls!
REBEL ÓG EAST U15 DIVISION 2 HURLING Whitechurch 1-16 Castlelyons 3-8
This game was played in Whitechurch on Saturday morning in good conditions but there was a strong wind, and our opponents won the toss and elected to play against the wind in the first half which did have an effect in the outcome. Both teams were very evenly matched and Castlelyons took a little time to settle with the wind at their backs and put some fine scores on the board. We led 1-7 to 0-5 at the short whistle.
However, the second half turned into a physical battle all over the pitch and credit to our lads, they weren’t lacking the physical part of the game either which was great to see. The wind held strong and credit to Whitechurch they managed it that bit better too and ran out winners by two points. However, our lads can take a lot of positives from the game and no doubt a bit of learning that can be focused on in training. Well done lads. The referee was Christopher Byrne and had a good game. Our next outing will be football on Saturday, July 3 at home to St Dominics with a 1.30pm throw in.

EXCITEMENT BUILDING FOR MUNSTER SHC CORK v LIMERICK IN THURLES ON SATURDAY
Well Cork hurlers like Kerry’s footballers are judged on one standard and that is All-Irelands. Champions back in 2005 but a famine since for a proud county like Cork. In 2005 Castlelyons had two men on the panel. Timmy McCarthy starred on that team and won his third All-Ireland senior medal and Ciarán McGann a sub. Fast forward sixteen years and we have two men on the Cork panel as the Rebels take on Limerick. Niall O’Leary is going well, and Colm Spillane is back on modified training and hoping to make the panel. Niall has had a solid year to date and hurled very well throughout the league as he tightens the rains at corner back.
Colm Spillane is so unfortunate as he picked up an injury earlier in the year that almost threatened his hurling career. Indeed, he has been dogged by injury with a few years and yet gave so many great displays for club and county and no doubt he will be ready for the fray again on Saturday. So best of luck to Cork and the lads as it’s high time to knock sparks off a rocky road.
CASTLELYONS U8S AND U11S OUTING TO CHARLEVILLE
Our U8 and U11 teams headed for Charleville and had some exciting and interesting games against the home side. At this level it is all about fun and enjoyment and when there are goals and points scored it great too. Our lads did well and games like this will really help. Mighty hurling lads. Keep it up.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS
Declan Sexton with assistance from members of the Steering Group have prepared a very thorough presentation setting out two options for the layout of proposed development going forward. The presentation provides some detail on both options, potential phasing, and early cost estimates. The presentation will be circulated to all members of the adult, camogie and juvenile clubs shortly. It is intended that a special club meeting will be held shortly, and these options will be presented, discussed, and subsequently voted upon. The date of the proposed meeting will be notified to club members in the coming weeks, subject to easing of Covid restrictions. Members of the adult, juvenile and camogie clubs are invited to submit any comments or queries in advance with any member of the Development Steering Committee.
A RETURN TO SOME FESTIVAL DAYS
Both the Community Centre, Camogie and GAA are planning for a few days of fun and festival in late July or early August, so we are looking forward to the details. The Community Council are planning an open-air summer concert for Sunday, August 29, an afternoon of ceoil, caint agus craic. This will be inclusive of all ages and all clubs and associations in the Parish of Castlelyons, Coolagown and Britway. This is a free concert with everyone participating free of charge. A picnic with friends or neighbours, a day of sing song, music, comedy, competition, and fun. Hopefully, the most recent threat of Covid will have abated in a few weeks as the numbers vaccinated is increasing daily and we can enjoy these celebratory events.
