Mary Barry scores a 67 to win Centra competition

-

Last week’s competition played on Sunday/Monday, June 20/21 was kindly sponsored by Centra Fermoy and we thank them for the support. As with all two-day competitions playing conditions can vary, the Sunday players had weather more akin to March, and those conditions continued well into Monday morning. It was Monday afternoon before the temperatures increased to a level more in keeping with midsummer’s day. The winner on the day was management secretary and former lady captain Mary Barry (35) who had a great score of 67 nett. Well done to Mary and all the prize-winners on bringing in such fine scores. The results are as follows:

Centra 18 Hole Stroke/Medal Sunday/ Monday 20th/21st June - 1st Mary Barry (35) 67 nett, 2nd Emma Comyn (26) 71 nett b9, 3rd Siobhan Feehan (21) 71 nett, best gross Deirdre Butler 87 gross and 4th Fiona Collier (30) 72 nett B/9.

Next week’s competition is kindly sponsored by Fermoy Print and Design, and we thank them for their great support of Fermoy GC. The Baker Cup will be run in conjunction with this competition so it will be a versus par format as stipulated by the late Rosie Eager whose family presented the cup to the club. There is also a special prize for the lady in seventh place. Alas the reason for this tradition has been lost in the realms of time but we continue to hope someone will be able to let us know why this stipulation was put in place. Fermoy Ladies Club will continue to honour this lovely tradition as it is an important part of our club’s history.

INTER-CLUB MATCHES

Our minor team played on Wednesday, June 23 and we had two matches at home and three in Mallow. The ladies playing at home were Áine O’Grady and Lisa McLaughlin. Áine had a comfortable win on the 13th hole, Lisa having crossed to the 10th level, found herself in a bit of trouble and she approached the 16th three down with three to play. Undaunted by this Lisa showed her fighting spirit by winning the next three holes. Off down the 19th she went where a fine five clinched a second win for Fermoy. Our ladies in Mallow battled hard, when Pauline Hyland’s match did not go her way, all eyes turned to Siobhan Feehan and Anne Dineen who continued to fight tough opposition who had the advantage of local knowledge but alas both girls lost on 17th and 16th respectively.

On Sunday last our intermediate team played Douglas GC with three matches at home and two away. For a while things were looking good for Fermoy, Martha Brennan, Elaine Murphy and Eileen O’Neill were playing at home. Eileen won her match comfortably on the 13th hole and her victory was closely followed by Martha Brennan who won on the 16th hole. The home supporters turned their focus on Elaine’s match who was just one down on 18th tee.

Alas a wayward drive cost her a much-needed win, so it was with bated breath we awaited word from Douglas where Yvonne Stephenson and Niamh Buckeridge were representing Fermoy. Niamh had lost her match on the 18th, but Yvonne was still battling as she went up the 18th one down. Fingers and toes were crossed as we hoped lady luck would shine on us but, sadly, it was not to be as a hard-fought half was not enough and Douglas were the team to breathe a sigh of relief.

It was again a case of so near and yet so far for Fermoy. To lose three matches on the eighteenth is tough but when you consider that we do not have sufficient numbers of ladies to make up a large panel for managers to choose from, it was no mean achievement for our ladies to put up such a great battle against the might of a big club like Douglas.

We would like to thank all the ladies who gave their time so willing to the club, the ladies who played and minor team managers Catherine Murphy and Fiona Collier, intermediate team managers Mary Lysaght and Deirdre Butler and also those who turned out to support our teams. We wish the Mallow and Douglas teams well in the next rounds.

THURSDAY MORNING LADIES

On Thursday last we had ideal conditions for golf for our threeball scramble. It was a pleasant morning and while the sun didn’t shine the day was warm and quite calm. Twenty-seven ladies took part and afterwards it was lovely to sit on the patio for coffee and chat. The social aspect of golf is very important, it’s what most golfers missed most during both lockdowns. The enjoyment of this convivial atmosphere was very much in evidence following the ladies game. There was an array of prizes, some of which were very kindly sponsored by Paula O’Mahony and Rita Mulvihill.

THURSDAY THREEBALL SCRAMBLE RESULTS

Friday Night mixed recommences tomorrow Friday, July 2 at 5.30pm

Our very popular Friday night mixed begins again tomorrow evening and we thank our two captains officio Marie Byrne and Liam Butler for agreeing to coordinate the draw. The Friday night mixed is an integral part of our club’s social life dating back to when the old course was in the “Aerodrome” and very possibly beyond.

If one reads our centenary history book one will find a couple of anecdotes under the title “Pause for a laugh” on page 69 based on conversations overheard on a couple of those social evenings. It is a wonderful tradition, one which we should treasure and uphold. The social evenings are where you meet and get to know fellow members therefore, we encourage all our newer members to come along and give it a try. The “mixed” is where many of us won our first prize playing golf so you may not go home empty handed either. The craic and laughter can be mighty even at a social distance, many a visitor to the club on a Friday evening has commented on the wonderful atmosphere that surrounds this event.
