Glanworth’s gallant fifteen

-

Deel Rovers (Milford) 4-7 Glanworth 0-5

We had fifteen bodies back in Milford for the first round of the junior league on Tuesday week last, June 22. Not an easy feat considering half of this team were on the junior hurling panel that won the North Cork Championship the previous Sunday. Some were suffering from fatigue and some from partying and it was great to fulfil the fixture.

We were taken apart at times by a lively, youthful Milford team but our boys knuckled down and got five points from play. Young Thomas Quinlan started and got our first point from play. I liked what I saw here. He is a great prospect, football skills to burn. Colm Whelton also got on the scoresheet and it won’t be too long before he features on both first teams. Emmett Sheehan shows his class with two points and Michael Cashman scored the other. Captain Michael Blackburn at centre back had a great game. He did an accountancy exam that day between twelve and four. What commitment!

The two Kielys always give their all. Paul and James, great lads. Paul went into goal in the second half and never lets the side down. Michael Cashman’s long kickouts were telling and Padraig Hannon looked very accomplished. Very talented in all codes. Our new man Pa Roche was on hand all over the field. He looks a teak-tough, honest prospect. Looking forward to seeing him hurl.

Scott Sheehan did well in the corner. And by far our best player Damian Curran got an injury and had to play on. Damian is destined to play intermediate very soon and would have been replaced by selector James Dash Sheehan but he had to give Emmett one of his boots at the start of the match. No wonder Emmett scored two points, it was James’ boot.

Vice-captain Harvey McGrath got on a lot of ball. He moved into good positions and the ball seemed to go down the other side which more times than not was too congested. It was great to see Jessie Walsh coming into form. He had a good game.

The tall full forward Jack Fogarty from a very loyal family looked the part. And Jerome Fitzgibbon slotted in very well at midfield to complete the team. David Leahy and James Sheehan were selectors who co-ordinated and looked after the balls, first aid, water, jerseys, you name it and not an easy task from ones so young. Well done to one and all. Clyda and Castletownroche complete this group.

Glanworth scorers: Emmett Sheehan 0-2, Tom Quinlan 0-1, Colm Whelton 0-1, Patrick Roche 0-1.

GLANWORTH INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL

On our pitch last Sunday we played Dohenys in round two of the league having already lost to Aghada in round one at home. Next up is Nemo Rangers away next Sunday morning at 12 o’clock. When you play the league should you play fringe players to see will some of them make the first fifteen? Sometimes you are left with no choice when the panel is reduced for various reasons. This was the case last Sunday when we had only one sub. To see no one kick the ball at halftime was a new one for me. A first.

We were reduced to fourteen before half time. A sin bin job, ten minutes. And late in the match shipped a heavy tackle so all our panel was on the field as Gerry had to come off. Conor Dennehy and Emmett Sheehan scored a point apiece with Shane O’Riordan getting one from play and four frees. Colm Whelton at corner back made one great telling interception, showing well.

Johnny O’Sullivan looked a handful all through, getting the frees Shane converted. Diarmuid Colfer caught the eye as did the industrious Blackburns - William, John and Phillip. Ciaran Murphy’s long kickouts were good where Robert O’Driscoll and Sean Finn did Trojan work. Jerome Fitzgibbon completed the halfback line. Emmett Sheehan started at centre forward with Conor Dennehy on one wing and Johnny on the other. Harvey McGrath got a run in the corner with Shane O’Riordan at full and Gerry O’Neill in the corner. Young Thomas Quinlan came on and moved well.
