Shocking discovery as several cars dumped in Blackwater

- KATIE GLAVIN

Concerns were raised this week regarding a number of cars dumped in the River Blackwater and the impact they may have on water quality.

The shocking discovery was made last week by Irish Examiner journalist Dan MacCarthy, who had been out on the Blackwater on his kayak for recreational purposes, near Dromana Bridge, outside Cappoquin.

Local councillor John Pratt, from Tallow, subsequently raised the issue at this week’s meeting of the Dungarvan Lismore District.

He noted that five to six cars were dumped into the River Blackwater near the Dromana gate area in West Waterford.

Cllr Pratt described the issue as ‘very worrying’ claiming that he had been sent photos of the dumped cars which were in the water and covered in debris and branches.

Speaking during the meeting, Cllr Pratt highlighted two key issues, the first being who the culprits of the dumping may have been, and the second being the possible impact of the dumped cars on water quality in the area.

“I am asking the council what our intention will be going forward to prevent or stop this very serious issue,” Cllr Pratt said.

‘DIFFICULT LOCATION’

Environmental Officer with Waterford City and County Council Ray Moloney, told the councillor that he had only become aware of the issue through Cllr Pratt that morning, prior to the meeting.

He noted that he had referred the issue to the environmental enforcement department.

“Looking at the photographs supplied, it looks like a quite difficult location to access, so we might have to get some boats to get the staff into that area and examine the extent of it,” Mr Moloney said.
