Signage sought for new Tallow road, as roads’ schemes queried

- KATIE GLAVIN

Signage directing road users to the new road in Tallow was requested once again at this week’s meeting of the Dungarvan Lismore Municipal District.

Local councillor, James Tobin, requested that the signs be put up in Tallow to display the new road more prominently.

“Chapel Street is not suitable for wide loads, and especially very high loads. The telephone line there is being torn down nearly monthly,” Cllr Tobin said.

Senior engineer with Waterford City and County Council, Gabriel Hynes, informed the councillor that the council is currently reviewing what the appropriate signage should be.

“It is our intention to put up additional signage there. It won’t be statutory, it will just be advisory along Chapel Street,” Mr Hynes said.

He added that signage would be organised within the next couple of weeks.

L.I.S. FUNDING

The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) was also commended by Cllr Tobin, who queried as to whether the government may make more funding available.

In response, Mr Hynes noted that the council received an allocation in the region of €270,000 and have been advised by the Department that additional funding may become available.

Mr Hynes said that the government requested that the council provide an additional list of schemes for the funding.

“We will be seeking additional funding and we’ll await the department’s response in relation to that,” Mr Hynes added.

C.I.S. - MONEY NOT AS PLENTIFUL

On a similar note, Cllr Tobin also noted that Community Involvement Schemes (CIS) may not be as popular currently, as people may ‘find it hard’ to seek funding from others towards the scheme. Under such schemes, the community contributes 15% of the cost as a financial contribution or they carry out works or contribute land to the value of 30%, Mr Hynes noted.

“It’s hard at the moment as money isn’t as plentiful,” Cllr Tobin said.

Mr Hynes noted that there are five or six schemes this year where people are contributing financially, and two ‘significant’ schemes where people are carrying out ‘significant works’ and giving land.

“It is the Department’s criteria that they set down and we must comply with it,” Mr Hynes added.

Waterford City & County Council were granted in the region of €670,000 in 2021.
