Tallow left out of Explore More Waterford map

- KATIE GLAVIN

Promoting Waterford tourism was a popular topic at last week’s plenary meeting as local councillor John Pratt commended a new booklet ‘Walk Waterford – From Sea to Mountains’.

The booklet features a series of almost 40 recreational walks throughout Waterford and is accompanied by an online resource with Director of Services Ivan Grimes saying would be the main focus of the promotion.

Highlighting the new Explore More Waterford website which showcases attractions across the county, Cllr Pratt expressed disappointment that some places weren’t included in it such as his own home place of Tallow which, he said, “wasn’t included at all.”

In response to the councillor’s concerns, Mr Grimes stated that the council would be expanding the app for the further promotion of Waterford to tourists.

The Explore More Waterford app was recently launched by Waterford City and County Council and in the Blackwater Valley area, 26 different locations are showcased.

A host of places and activities in Lismore are included such as Lismore Golf Club, Ballyrafter House Hotel, St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lady Louisa’s Walk by the River Blackwater, Lismore Heritage Centre and Lismore Castle and Gardens.

The Blackwater Distillery situated on the banks of the Blackwater River in Ballyduff Upper is also on the list, citing the range of gins, vodkas and whiskeys crafted locally and the tours, tastings and masterclasses offered.

Tourin House and Gardens are listed, noting the fifteen-acre garden with mature broadleaved trees and a fine collection of shrubs and plants to be seen at the Italianate style villa which is the home of the Jameson family of Irish Whiskey fame.

The Classical style late Georgian house, Cappoquin House and Gardens which was home to the Keane family since 1735, is also among the West Waterford attractions listed as is Mount Melleray Abbey, Villierstown and Dromana Woods Walk, Dromana Gate, Towers Walk in Ballysaggartmore and St Declan’s Way.

Attractions in the Copper Coast area, Comeragh Uplands, Waterford Estuary and Gaeltacht areas are all also available to view via the app.

The app, which is available in the IOS App Store and in the Google Play Store, showcases all that rural Waterford has to offer.

Waterford City and County Council is also launching a Visitor Experience Development Plan funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme in conjunction with the Local Flavours Interreg Europe programme.
